Lady Tigers Fall In Hard-Fought Sectional Final

GOSHEN – The Warsaw Tigers are a quick, athletic team who thrives upon the up-tempo game. The Penn Lady Kingsmen, however, were even quicker, and used an efficient transition game to clinch the IHSAA Class 4A Sectional title 54-31 Saturday in Goshen.

Warsaw entered the evening’s fray focused on avenging last season’s heartbreaking 45-44 loss, but Penn quickly picked up an 8-0 lead before Warsaw put numbers on the board with Abby Sanner’s free throw at the 3:00 mark in the opening stanza. Penn made another run, 10-0 this time, to close out the first period on top 18-1.

Tiger head coach Lenny Krebs expressed his surprise toward his team’s early struggle considering the team’s tough road schedule comprised of state-ranked foes Penn (in November), Fishers, Norwell, and perennially tough Homestead.

“I think we were in a little bit of shock with the quickness and intensity (Penn) brought.” He spoke. “It caught me off guard because I thought our schedule was preparing us for that opportunity.”

The Tigers’ energy was remarkably full measure from start to finish. Krebs was pleased by his team’s continued fighting spirit, and his senior leadership on the floor.

“They’ve (seniors) showed us how to compete, how to get better, and how to play the game the right way.” the Tiger mentor said. “As much as I hate losing, I’m going to be able to go home, lay my head down, and rest because I know these seniors are going to be successful in life.”

The seniors Krebs mentioned are Kensie Ryman, a Grace College commit, Audrey Grimm, a Taylor University soccer commit, and Kendall Wayne. They added their thoughts on the night’s loss and their final season.

“I thought we accomplished a lot (this) year. We fought to the end, we won hour holiday tournament which we haven’t done in years.” Ryman said. “The most important accomplishment we’ve had this year is the love we’ve developed on our team, and the culture we are leaving behind for the younger girls.”

“I just thought we played our hearts out throughout the year.” Grimm added. “Through COVID and injury, we came together and played as a team with heart.”

“I’m really proud of my team. I think we’ve gotten stronger throughout (the season).” Wayne said. “I couldn’t be prouder of how we competed and got to this position to play Penn for first place. We left everything out there. That’s who we are, and that’s what we believe in.”

Warsaw’s offense settled down a little bit in the second quarter, but Penn’s ability to score outside (three 3-pointers) and inside stretched the Kingsmen’s lead to 38-17. Kacilyn Krebs opened the period with a trey, scoring eight points within the frame.

The Kingsmen outscored the Tigers 10-8 to nudge their third quarter lead a little further, 48-25 before each time eventually cleared their bench in the final quarter’s final 90 seconds.

The game, sans the first quarter, was much closer thereafter. Penn outscored Warsaw 36-30 in after their opening frame run.

Penn’s balanced attack was led by Grace Shutt’s 12 points on four 3-pointers, Kaitlyn Costner and Trinity Clinton, an Ohio State commit, each added 8 points, and Grace Adams and Jordyn Smith contributed 7 points apiece. The Kingsmen shot 50% form the field, 47% from 3-point range, and hit all seven of their free throw attempts.

Warsaw was led by Kacilyn Krebs’ 10 points, followed by Grimm (9 points), Ryman and Bailie Stephens (4 points each), freshman Ava Wetzel (2 points, 5 rebounds). Abby Sanner (1 point, 4 caroms), and sophomore Lauren Grose (1 point, 3 boards) rounded out the evening’s scoring. The team hit 9 of 28 from the field (32%), and 12 of 17 from the charity tripe (71%).

Warsaw finishes its 2020-21 campaign at 18-6. Penn (20-3) advances to the LaPorte regional to face Merrillville (14-5).
