Wawasee led area wrestling squads with seven IHSAA Semi-State qualifiers in Saturday’s upcoming tournament in East Chicago. Eleven additional qualifiers are comprised of wrestlers from Warsaw (5), Tippecanoe Valley (4) and Triton (2).

Two of the 18 area representatives stood at the very top of the podium. Wawasee’s Logan Stuckman (132 lb. weight class), and unbeaten Jace Alexander (138) were the lone area champions.

Area runners-up include Kaleb Salazar (Wawasee 106), Hunter Miller (Wawasee 113), Dylan Tom (Wawasee 120), Jacob Linky (Warsaw 170), Brandon Estepp (Warsaw 182), Caleb Lemler (Triton 285).

Linky, (26-3) heading to East Chicago, lost 7-4 to undefeated Penn Eastin (29-0) in the 170 finals. Estepp, avenged a sectional loss to Valley’s Brandon Hammer in the 182 semi-finals, but fell to Mishawaka’s Cody Timmerman by fall at 5:14 in the finals.

Third place finishers include Jose Martinez (Warsaw 132), Gavin Malone (Wawasee 145), Brandon Hammer (Tippy Valley 182).

Warsaw’s Martinez, trailing 7-1 to Stuckman in their semifinal match, secured a takedown but could not secure the five-second near-fall points. Stuckman advanced to the finals winning 7-6.

Fourth place finishers were Galvin Shambaugh (Tippy Valley 106), Elias Garza (Warsaw 113), Andrew Ross (Warsaw 138), Branson McBrier (Tippy Valley 152), Cameron Zimmerman (Wawasee 170), Bazle Owens (Tippy Valley 195), and Anthony Schuh (Triton 220).

Wawasee finished third with 124 points, and Warsaw finished sixth with 61 points in the team standings.

Warsaw Tiger head coach Kris Hueber talked about his team’s current performance and what they want to expect from the program in future seasons.

“We had a good day at Penn.” Hueber said. “I want us to appreciate, as a team, what we accomplished today, but I want us to become a program who expects greater numbers advancing to Semi-State in future seasons.”

Coach Hueber also discussed how he’ll prepare his five remaining wrestlers for this coming Saturday.

“As long as we have wrestlers on the mat, we’re practicing as a team.” The Tiger mentor said. “We have a few multi-sport athletes who will move on to track or baseball, but we’ll have a pretty full room this week.”

The Semi-State meet will launch at 10:00 a.m. Eastern time Saturday.
