Kensie Ryman ripped the cords for three baskets beyond the arc, and Kacilyn Krebs added a trey of her own and two driving left-handed layups. Ryman’s nine points and Krebs’s seven took the Tigers out of the panic they suffered during an abysmal 1 for 22 shooting effort in the first half.
“Credit Northridge, they had us panicked with their defense,” Tiger head coach Lenny Krebs said. “In the second half we calmed down and started running some ball-screen concept and slowed down our cuts. Kensie Ryman stepped up, hit two (3-pointers), Kacilyn hit a couple and we just fed off that momentum. This is one of those teams that feeds off of positive momentum.”
That momentum put the Tigers ahead 20-17 after 3 quarters, as they the Raiders 16-10 in the third frame.
Northridge sophomore Eva Fisher quickly opened the fourth period with a 3-pointer to tie the ballgame at 20, but Warsaw’s Krebs wasn’t finished. The 5’9 junior guard nailed two 3-pointers to regain the lead 26-20, and the orange and black never looked back.
Defense turned out to be the difference as the Tigers stepped up and challenged almost all the Raiders’ shots in the second half. The two teams combined for a miserable 4 of 39 shooting in the first half as Northridge headed to the locker room with a 7-4 halftime advantage.
Warsaw avoided a larger deficit in their scoreless second quarter by aggressively pursuing loose rebounds that otherwise would have been second chance opportunities for the Raiders.
“When we win the rebounding battle, we’re undefeated this year” Coach Krebs said. “As good as we are defensively at times, we give up an offensive rebound and all that work is in vain and we have to try to do it all again.”
The Tigers outrebounded the Raiders 40-28, including 18 offensive boards. Krebs and Grimm grabbed 9 caroms each, followed by Sanner (7 boards) and Kendall Wayne (6)
Fisher led Northridge with 14 points, 9 rebounds (5 offensive), two assists, and two steals. Jaci Walker added 7 tallies for the Raiders, who finish their season at 16-8.
Warsaw’s offense was led by Krebs’s 16 points, followed by Ryman’s 10 points. Abby Sanner (5 points), Kendall Wayne (3 points), and Audrey Grimm rounded out the team’s scoring.
The Tigers (18-5) quickly moved their attention toward their finals opponent, the Penn Kingsmen (19-3). Warsaw is looking to avenge last year’s 45-44 sectional finals loss as well as a 61-30 shellacking early this season.
Coach Krebs found interesting use for last year’s sectional runner-up game ball.
“Our girls practice with this basketball that says Penn 45 Warsaw 44 since sectional championship last year.”
Tip-off is 7:00 p.m. tonight at Goshen High School.
