Honoring Dr. Pitts

The Parkview Physicians Group Warsaw team would like to remember and honor Dr. Gary Pitts, who will be departing our practice in March, for his incredible service to our community.
In 1996, family medicine in Warsaw changed for the better. A Warsaw native, Dr. Pitts, returned home and began practicing at Kosciusko Family Healthcare. Taking over for another well-loved retiring doctor, he had stepped into some big shoes, but quickly filled the role. Dr. Pitts’ patient population grew, and he became one of Warsaw’s favorite doctors. He is well known for his Christian outlook, smile, hugs, knowledge and his ability to make you feel like you are the only patient he must see ... even if you just came from an overcrowded waiting room.
Over the past 25 years, Dr. Pitts has made an immeasurable impact on the community. He delivered around 2,700 babies and even got to deliver second-generation babies to women he had delivered. Dr. Pitts strives to make excellent healthcare accessible to everyone, but especially to those who are underserved. During the years he was with American Health Network, his office offered discounts to those without insurance and he always did his best to keep costs down whenever possible. Another group Dr. Pitts takes pride in caring for are his Spanish-speaking patients. Being one of the only fluent Spanish-speaking doctors in the area, he often had multiple patients each day who were excited to have a provider that could speak directly to them.
Whether caring for patients here in Warsaw or on one of his many medical mission trips to Guatemala, Dr. Pitts left his mark. His patients were his friends, and he would tell anyone that. His patients all agree that he is their friend, too. Many were greeted by phrases such as “Hey little sis!” or “How’s it going my friend” followed up with a big embrace or a firm handshake. Those of us who were lucky enough to work with Dr. Pitts daily found a boss who was more like a dad, brother and friend than a boss. Rarely was a harsh word spoken, and when correction was needed the moment was often turned into “a teaching moment.” As a colleague and a mentor to so many, Dr. Pitts is admired.
Since teaching was his initial career, he has a knack for making complicated processes just a little easier to understand, and his passion for medicine and people is contagious. Several of his current co-workers have been with him for more than 10 years and one for his entire career. Two of his current colleagues in the Parkview Physicians Group office decided to move to Warsaw after coming and doing a rotation with Dr. Pitts during their training.
Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, there will not be the large going-away gathering that is wanted and deserved. However, there are still some ways that patients and community members can reach out to show Dr. Pitts how much he has meant to them. See below:
• Drop off a letter or card in the box provided in his office waiting room at 1355 Mariners Drive, Warsaw, IN 46582 on the second floor.
• Send an email to [email protected]. This email address has been created to allow memories, photos, emails and good-byes to be sent directly to Dr. Pitts.
While the community is certainly sad to see Dr. Pitts go and will struggle to replace him, we are thrilled to see him follow his passion of lifestyle medicine and are maybe a little jealous that it leads him to the Sunshine State.
The staff at Parkview Physicians Group – Family Medicine would like the patients to know that we are ready and willing to continue providing the exceptional care that you have come to know and expect from Dr. Pitts.
