Goshen Shades Wawasee In Tight NLC Contest

But the Warriors hustled and whittled Goshen’s lead down to three and had a chance to tie the game in the final seconds before falling 43-40 Friday, Dec. 10 in Northern Lakes Conference girls basketball at Iterra Gym.
Wawasee (6-4, 0-3) cut the gap to 43-40 on Kennedy White’s runner with nine seconds remaining.
When the RedHawks’ Sarah Harmelink missed a foul shot at the :6.6 mark and Becca Smith gathered the rebound for the Warriors, the visitors had a shot to tie with a 3-pointer.
A double-dribble call on Wawasee turned the ball back over to Goshen (5-5, 1-1) run out the clock and seal the NLC victory.
“I just kept telling them it’s one possession at a time,” said Dina Coverstone, who steered the team with Warriors head coach Matt Carpenter out because of illness. “We’ve got to get a stop on defense and a score on offense.
“We had to give ourselves little reminders tonight when Goshen started that run and there was a timeout, we were still ahead by three. We just need to continue to work on that game-situation mentality.”
Jada Carter (10 points — five in each half), White (9 — seven in the first half), Emily Haines (6 — a 3-pointer in both the second and third quarters), Kaydence Shepherd (6) and Becca Smith (5 — all in the second quarter) led the Warrior attack.
Of Wawasee’s seven 3-pointers, Carter, Shepherd and Haines netted two each and White buried one.
Smith hauled in nine rebounds and White five.
The Warriors committed 20 turnovers — 13 in the second half.
On a night when Wawasee was called for 15 fouls, Carter (4) and Doss (5) sat for long stretches. Doss fouled out with 1:22 left in the game.
Guiding Goshen’s offense was Tori Eldridge (14 points — 12 in the second half with nine in the fourth quarter), 6-foot-2 Kyra Hill (14 — eight in the first half) and Breyana Cline (9 — five in the second half).
Eldridge canned two 3-pointers and Cline one for the RedHawks. Hill grabbed 10 rebounds and Eldridge seven.
Goshen gave up the ball 12 times, including just one in the fourth quarter.
An 18-5 RedHawk run had turned a 27-23 edge for the Warriors in the first two minutes of the third quarter into 41-32 Goshen lead with 2:13 left in the contest.
RedHawks coach Shaun Hill credited his team’s play without the ball for the sparking the run.
“It was an attention to detail defensively,” said Hill. “We told them we had to get it done on that end of the court and the offense will come.
“We mixed it up defensively (in the second half).”
With a Cline 3-pointer to beat the third-quarter buzzer Goshen tied the game a 30-all going into the fourth period.
Wawasee led 23-18 at halftime.
The Warriors used a 7-0 run to build a 23-16 lead then Maddie Garber beat the buzzer before intermission for the RedHawks.
“We’ve got five seniors on our team this year and they’ve got goals,” said Coverstone of Carter, Doss, Haines, Smith and White. “They got our team to settle.
“We had to battle hard defensively tonight. Kyra Hill’s a tough matchup. Our girls were adjusting to doing that well.”
Goshen took a 12-7 advantage into the second period. The RedHawks also owned a five-point lead at 10-5. The Warriors was ahead by as many as three at 5-2.
In the junior varsity game, Wawasee beat Goshen 44-21. Mackenzie Hackleman (9 points), Abbi Burelison (8), Molly Beer (6) and Lydia Stookey (5) led the attack for the JV Warriors. Grace Kercher (8) paced the JV RedHawks.
Wawasee visits Bethany Christian Tuesday, Dec. 14 and Goshen goes to Northridge Friday, Dec. 17.
