Students at Presby Preschool were able to drop off donations to First United Methodist Church’s Community Closet in Warsaw Wednesday and today.

Courtney Brown, assistant director of Presby Preschool, said the event is called the Presby Service Project.

Presby Preschool has been collecting hygiene items, household cleaners and other items for about a month, Brown said. The Community Closet asked for mostly hygiene products like tooth brushes, soaps, tooth paste and household items like laundry detergent. No food items were requested.

“And then we had the children each carry over one item and actually physically drop it off to the Closet themselves,” Brown said.

Brown said the Community Closet is to provide different materials to people in the community who need assistance.

Students of Presby Preschool and their families purchased the items donated to the Community Closet and brought them in. There was a spot in the hallway outside of the preschool where the students were able to drop off the items themselves “and we got to watch it grow,” she said.

On Wednesday and today, items were put on a table and students were able to pick an item to take with them and students physically gave it to “the folks at the Closet who run it,” Brown said. Most of the students brought over items Wednesday with about 25 students bringing over items today. Brown said Presby wanted all the students to see the good work they did.

Brown said she believed about 546 items were collected to be donated to the Community Closet. Presby has about 230 students, “so that’s a pretty big accomplishment for some little preschoolers.”

Being across the street from one another, Presby and First United Methodist Church have kind of a working relationship. Brown said she believed it was one of Presby’s board members who suggested the donations and, with different ideas, it came together.

“It was a little beautiful event and I think it will be memorable for the kids,” Brown said.

She said they felt it was the best way for the students to see the good deed they did instead of having an event where the items were shipped to a place the students didn’t know anything about.

“And we hoped by doing it with such a large group, it would create a real memorable experience for everybody,” she said.

“Our number one goal is just to show children Jesus’ love and, you know, by them getting to experience the love here in the building and then us being able to physically give that love in another way, I think is a magical thing to see the genuine love that small children and the joy they can bring because they’re just so pure,” Brown said.
