LAKELAND, Fla. – For the second straight match, Grace’s men’s soccer team went to overtime with its opponent.

Unfortunately for Grace, the Lancers (2-2) came up short in extra time again, suffering a 3-2 defeat at Southeastern on Saturday.

Grace led during the second half of both contests this week in Florida, including against No. 7 St. Thomas on Thursday and versus Southeastern on Saturday.

But Southeastern rallied to tie the game before regulation and found a winner in the first overtime.

Saturday’s match did not lack for offense; the two sides combined for 35 shots and 13 corner kicks in the contest.

Two goals were scored in the first half, and both came just before halftime. Felipe Gruber nearly began the day’s scoring in the 27th minute when his shot clanged off the crossbar.

But it was the Fire who struck first. Grace committed a foul a few feet outside the penalty box, and Southeastern promptly stepped up and scored the free kick.

The Lancers were not flustered, however, scoring an immediate equalizer. Daniel Santos Rosa fired a low cross in front of goal, and Famade Bamba slid in his first collegiate goal.

The teams entered halftime tied 1-1 after the pair of quick goals.

In the 64th minute, Grace took the lead. Ze Maria Goncalves craftily beat a few defenders on the right side of the field and squared a pass in the box. Felipe Gruber received the pass, spun quickly to avoid two players and drilled his shot low into the net.

Less than 10 minutes later, Southeastern kept the game alive. The Fire earned a corner kick and scored on a headed attempt to make the score 2-2.

Bamba and Martim Cardoso both tried shots in the final 10 minutes, but neither team could score as the game progressed to overtime.

Grace was the aggressor on offense to begin the first overtime session. Santos Rosa and Goncalves each had a shot in the first two minutes, and Cardoso had two shots in rapid succession saved by the goalkeeper.

But the Fire withstood the early onslaught by Grace and found a golden goal winner at the 95:35 mark.

Cardoso had five shots with four on goal, and Bamba, Gruber and Goncalves each shot twice. Matteo Conci recorded eight saves in goal for Grace.

The Lancers have another challenging road trip ahead as they travel to Kansas. Grace will play No. 17 MidAmerica Nazarene and No. 1 Missouri Valley during their trip next week.
