Tuesday: Lady Tiger Soccer Wins NLC?Opener

By Chip Davenport-
The only thing more stifling than the near-100-degree heat index temperature on the pitch was the Tiger defensive front.
Senior defender Meg DeBoest led the effort along with junior Taylon Chastain, senior Kiersten Parker and junior Jordan Love to not only shut out Plymouth through the 75-minute mark (Rockies’ midfielder Lexie Rose), but they also kept the Rockies from getting any shots on goal in the first half.
Tiger head coach Jon Hoover was pleased with his side’s defensive effort, citing DeBoest’s leadership, and Chastain’s effort moving into a starting role.
“DeBoest is a great player,” Hoover said. “She’s been playing center back, she knows how to organize things, she plays great ball from side-to-side, and she reads passes before they come. A lot of that solid defensive front… was her.”
“Chastain played a huge role coming off the center back,” Hoover continued. “She usually comes off the bench, but she played the whole game for us.”
Aubrey Vervynckt, Plymouth’s top-scoring senior forward, recorded her side’s first shot on goal at the 55-minute mark, but she finished the evening scoreless.
Warsaw’s offensive strategy shifted from using counterattacks to a focus on ball movement. The heat had nothing to do with the host side’s slowed-down approach. Hoover’s offensive strategy was geared toward load management.
“We just came off a weekend where we played three games in two days. We ran really well, but we were entering (this) week where we had a game Tuesday, Thursday, and Saturday. We wanted to possess the ball, move the ball around in the 18 (meter line). It was fun to move the ball around.”
Corissa Koontz (two assists), a senior who committed to Loyola, and Sam Aalbue (one goal at 67’ from 40 meters) had strong offensive efforts in their midfielder positions.
It’s apparent why Hoover leans on Koontz’s corner kicks for his side’s offensive efforts. Both of Koontz’s assists were corner kicks resulting in header goals by Abbi Kohler (10’), and Macy Wayne (44’). Aalbue’s header at close range, gently lofting just above the outstretched arms of Plymouth goalkeeper Sydney Rice, and continuing above the top of the goal, would have resulted in the Rambler commit’s third corner kick assist.
The Tigers’ travel to NorthWood tonight (6:45 p.m.), and to Fort Wayne Bishop Dwenger Saturday morning (following a 10:00 a.m. JV game).
