On what was an exceptionally hot day for a run, the Warsaw girls cross country team finished in first place of the 29th annual Warsaw Cross Country Classic Tuesday.

On the boys side, Warsaw finished in second, behind winners Columbia City.

The Lady Tigers dominated their side of the 5k run, finishing with nine runners inside the top 20, including four of the top five. Winning the race was Warsaw’s Josefina Rastrelli with a time of 19:48. Fellow Tigers Wini Barnett and Ava Knight rounded out the top three.

“I thought the girls battled well,” Warsaw girls head coach Jason Fleming said. “Our goal is to close the gaps between our one and five and see if we can move everyone up closer to the front. Any one of (these girls) can be up front.”

The Manchester girls team finished in second place, with three finishers in the top 20, and Ayla Cashdollar finishing in fourth place with a time of 21:44. Rounding out the top three was Columbia City.

“The team ran really well today. I’m very proud of them,” Manchester head coach Jody Sarber said. “We’ve had some memorable performances from several kids but we’ve got freshman stepping up. On the girls side today our freshman were one two. We’re running well but we want to be more aggressive in the middle.”

On the boys side, Warsaw was led to its second-place finish by Harrison Phipps who finished third. The Tigers had seven runners finish in the top 20, including three in the top ten. Winning the race was Columbia City’s Austin Hall, who finished with a time of 16:46. The Eagles dominated the competition, with three top six finishers.

“This’ll be a season long project to get back to the state meet but we’ve got the talent to do it,” Warsaw boys head coach Jim Mills said. “We knew Harrison would be up there near the front, he was. We’ve got a lot of young guys and a lot of work to do right now.

Both Tippecanoe Valley and Whitko finished less than five runners in both competitions, making the schools ineligible for scoring. Chesnee Miller of Valley finished in sixth place of the girl’s race.

The Warsaw boys and girls will run again Tuesday in a Northern Lakes Conference round robin race.
