There were no injuries or significant damage from the explosion, according to a news release Thursday from the Warsaw Police Department.
Central Dispatch received a 911 report at 7 p.m. Wednesday of a suspected pipe bomb on the Arnolt property. The property was vacated over 20 years ago, the release states, and has often been an issue of contention for the city with homeless people inhabiting the building or vandalism occurring inside the structure.
The city of Warsaw is working with Real America to convert the Arnolt property, which the city currently owns, into a multi-family housing development, depending on financial assistance from the state.
Wednesday evening, a homeless man was walking next to the building when he saw what he feared to be a pipe bomb on the north side of the building along Hendricks Street. Officers responded to the scene and found galvanized metal that was capped on both sides. There also was what appeared to be a burned-out fuse attached to the device, the release states.
Specialists with Fort Wayne Police Explosive Ordinance Disposal, as well as agents with the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives out of the Fort Wayne office responded to Warsaw to investigate. Based on their investigation, they attempted to render the device safe on the property. In the process of doing so, the device exploded, the release states.
Officers have no suspects at this time. Anyone with information on this is encouraged to call the Warsaw Police Detective Division at 574-385-2210.
Warsaw Police were assisted by Fort Wayne Police, Fort Wayne ATF, Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office and Winona Lake Police Department. Lutheran EMS and Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory were on standby during this event.
