By Staff Report-

The Northern Indiana Hispanic Health Coalition (NIHHC), Warsaw-Wayne Fire Territory, City of Warsaw, K21 Health Foundation, Bowen Center and Kosciusko County Health Department are joining forces to run a drive-thru COVID-19 Pfizer vaccine clinic from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. Aug. 28 in the parking lot of Our Lady of Guadalupe Church, 225 N. Gilliam Drive, Warsaw.

Everyone age 12 and older is welcome. No documents are required, and community members are encouraged to register for their appointments now through NIHHC’s COVID-19 hotline at 574-206-3938 or by calling 1-877-21-SALUD (72583). Second doses are scheduled for Sept. 18 at the same location, so attendees will already be registered and ready for the next step before they leave.

“This is a perfect opportunity for our kids, 12 years and older, who are just now going back to school, to get vaccinated,” said Liliana Quintero, NIHHC’s executive director. “They need to be ready for the school year, so make this a family event!”

Only 1 in 3 people are vaccinated in Kosciusko County, according to a recent report from the CDC. The COVID-19 pandemic has hit the Hispanic community particularly hard, and with the Delta variant spreading rapidly, especially in under-vaccinated communities, it is extremely important to receive a vaccine, according to a news release from NIHHC.

“We are six months out from another COVID-19 outbreak, and potentially, it will be worse,” said Dr. Bethany Wait, the health officer in nearby Elkhart County. “We can’t remain passive witnesses. Getting vaccinated prevents severe illness, hospitalizations, and death.”

With support from the CDC Foundation and REAL Services, NIHHC’s COVID-19 vaccination campaign, Unite Against COVID-19, has reached the community by partnering with trusted influencers and messengers, leaders, health care providers, and community organizations and agencies. By building relationships with community members and offering bilingual, culturally sensitive services at trusted locations, NIHHC aims to increase vaccination among Hispanics.

“NIHHC’s campaign engages the community to solve needs for our residents in Kosciusko County,” said K21 Health Foundation President and CEO Rich Haddad. “This vaccination event is another example of their leadership, and we are grateful that they continue to help our community in the ongoing battle with COVID-19.”

Warsaw Mayor Joseph Thallemer said collaboration efforts with NIHHC during the pandemic have moved his office to distribute bilingual health information, establish welcoming testing and vaccination sites and promote vaccine education.

“We are proud to partner with NIHHC for the vaccination event on August 28,” said Thallemer. “Don’t miss the opportunity if you still need the vaccine.”

NIHHC has already held two successful drive-thru Pfizer vaccine clinics in Elkhart. Most recently, nearly 300 people were vaccinated in four hours. Thirty-four percent of those attending were children between 12 and 17 years old.

“We are looking forward to seeing and serving everyone in the Warsaw area on August 28,” said Quintero. “We are providing vaccines and combatting COVID-19 as a community. Together, we can make Kosciusko County a healthier county!”

The Northern Indiana Hispanic Health Coalition’s mission is to provide preventative health care programs to the communities of Elkhart, Kosciusko, Noble and St. Joseph counties through education, advocacy, physician referral and research so that they may lead healthier lifestyles.
