Lacey Alber is in charge of the event, which is in its 13th year.
The Glass Slipper event is where CCS collects donated prom dresses in all styles and sizes and then allows any girl in need of a prom dress to make an appointment to pick one out for free.
“It started because my older sister had a classmate who couldn’t afford to go to prom, and my sister told my mom and said she doesn’t think it’s fair that people shouldn’t get to go to prom just because they can’t afford it,” Alber said. “Glass Slipper is an opportunity for us and the community to come together and provide prom assistance to basically anybody that needs it. This past year with the pandemic, I’m seeing lots of people from all levels of income who need assistance.”
Alber is the volunteer and intake coordinator at CCS.
“Dresses are donated from people in the community. I had a woman that just emailed me and said she wanted to help out, and I told her we needed larger-sized dresses, and she just went to Macy’s and bought some dresses for us,” Alber said. “I have prom dresses and prom shoes and I like to partner with local businesses to try to get gift cards to local restaurants and possibly tux rentals as well.”
Alber said Fiesta hair salon in the past has provided free hair styling, and Male Fashions in downtown Warsaw has provided discounts on tuxedo rentals.
“I remember my mom, every year there were dresses that I loved and my mom would say, ‘Oh, I wish I could,’ and I’d say, ‘I know, I know,’” Alber said. “I have a feeling this year there’s going to be almost a higher need.”
For anyone wanting to donate, CCS is open from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. Dresses, shoes or accessories for prom can be dropped off at CCS, 1195 Mariners Drive, Warsaw.
For any young lady in need of a dress, email Alber at [email protected] to schedule an appointment.
Dresses will be given out until May 14.
