By Staff Report-

Isaac Irwin, Carle Sroufe, Maggie Clark and Hannah Thomas won in the 2021 Wildcat Royal Showmanship Competition hosted by the Whitko Agricultural Department at the Whitko Career Academy (WCA).

Top showmanship honors were awarded in four categories: swine, sheep, goat and poultry. The annual competition is held to introduce new students to showmanship competitions within agriculture and generate new interest in the programming available through the agricultural discipline at WCA, according to a news release from Whitko.

The 2021 winners include: Isaac Irwin, swine; Carle Sroufe, sheep; Maggie Clark, goats; and Hannah Thomas, poultry.

The Wildcat Royal Showmanship Competition is an in-house competition representing students from Whitko Career Academy. This year’s competition took place on Monday at 9 a.m. at the Whitko Livestock Pavillion. The competition is judged by local community members and past Whitko Alumni who are actively involved in industries related to agriculture. This year’s judges included Jason Arnold for swine, Andy Bills for sheep and Dillon Sheiss for poultry and goats.

In this specific competition, judges focused on showmanship, meaning their focus was not on the animal being presented but the way the animal was shown by the handler. Showmanship can be defined as an effective presentation of an animal.  Showmanship is judged on a competitor’s ability to control their animal, present the animal, bring out it’s best characteristics, make less appealing faults of the animal less obvious to the judge and demonstrate overall knowledge of the animal being presented.

This year, WCA winning students were presented with wooden awards created in-house by the Whitko Mechanical Engineering Department led by Derrek Sorg.
