By Staff Report-

LARWILL – Since 1998, Indiana Connection and participating Indiana electric cooperatives have held an annual art contest for Indiana students in grades kindergarten through 12.

The winning works from each grade are used to illustrate the Cooperative Calendar of Student Art that participating REMCs/RECs have distributed. Each of the numbered grades is given the corresponding month of the year to illustrate: 12 grades, 12th month, according to a news release from?Whitko.

The contest provides young Hoosier artists an opportunity to express themselves and develop their artistic talent, while possibly earning cash prizes and statewide acclaim. This year, Electric Consumer hosted their 24th annual student calendar contest for the 2022 cooperative calendar. Whitko Jr./Sr. High School art students continued another successful tradition this year.

Two grade-level division winners were from Whitko, as well as two honorable mentions

The grade-level division winners were Justine Ocken, ninth grade, with her color pencil piece of an old wagon wheel against a red barn and Hannah Brown, 11th grade, with a scratchboard piece showing an abandoned van in tall grass.

Both the Whitko art students were awarded a $200 cash prize each, and their artwork will be featured in the May issue of Electric Consumer and printed as the cover of their corresponding month.

These first-place winners will illustrate the designated month of the 2022 Cooperative Calendar of Student Art, a wall calendar produced by Indiana Connection and distributed by participating Indiana Electric cooperatives and other organizations around the state.

Honorable Mention

Honorable mention to ninth-grade student Justine Ocken for her colored pencil illustration of horses in a field and 11th-grade student Kaitlin Anderson for her India ink wash of a vintage barn scene.

Honorable mentions are selected "at large" and the artwork will also be included in the calendar. Both Whitko students who won honorable mention received a $75 cash prize each.

Award Of Merits

Several students received the Award of Merits, but names have not been released at this time. Award of Merit means these students were of the 25 selected for each grade division during the first round of judging for their grade division.

Ocken accomplished a rare feat by being chosen for two awards: grade winner and honorable mention. The judges stated that the top three freshmen images they were trying to decide from were all Whitko pieces and all three were hers.
