Lukens Is TVSC’s Teacher Of The Year
By Jackie Gorski-
Each year, the Indiana Department of Education conducts the Indiana Teacher of the Year program “to recognize outstanding classroom teachers from across the state,” according to information provided at the meeting. All school corporations are encouraged to nominate one corporation Teacher of the Year, who will be in the running to be considered as the Indiana Teacher of the Year.
The four building Teachers of the Year were Ryan Adams, Akron; Lee Ann Rock, Mentone; Cheryl Huff, Tippecanoe Valley Middle School; Lukens, Tippecanoe Valley High School.
The building Teachers of the Year were selected in the fall. Each candidate was invited to complete a portfolio in accordance with the guidelines for Indiana Teacher of the Year.
Portfolios were evaluated by a committee compromised of a staff member from each school, an administrator, a school board member and a community member. A rubric is used, which was established by the Indiana Teach of the Year program.
The portfolio with the highest cumulative score was selected as the corporation’s Teacher of the Year.
Caroline Day, Mentone Elementary School counselor, was recognized by the Board since she is an Armstrong Award recipient.
Each year, the TVSC Teacher of the Year applies for different awards throughout the state that recognizes outstanding teachers. Day was selected as an Armstrong Teacher Educator for Indiana University School of Education. The intent of the award is to bring awardees to the IU-Bloomington campus to interact with students and faculty through a variety of activities. Two panel discussions will happen during the 2021-22 school year.
In other business, the Board approved a $20,000 grant from Akzo Nobel for small playground and courtyard updates.
AkzoNobel chose Mentone Elementary for its 2021 community project. They hope to paint playground equipment, put down sand, soil and mulch where needed in the K-1 and special needs playground. They also plan to purchase new toys for this area.
AkzoNobel plans to plant wildflower beds, fix the goldfish pond, trim and replace trees, add picnic tables and seating for adults.
