Tigers Claw Cavemen In NLC Track Opener

Aiden Binkerd raced to three wins for the Tigers in the 100 meters (11.56 sec.), the 200 meters (24.45 sec.), and on a relay leg of the 400-meter relay. The Warsaw junior sprinter was joined by Drew Heckaman, C.J. Mendez, and Ashton Wade turning in the winning time of 46.2 seconds. Binkerd edged Heckaman in a close 100-meter race by 0.01 second.
Hurdler Andrew Frush remained unbeaten in both hurdle events, sprinting to times of 16.28 seconds in the 100-meter high, and 544.17 seconds in the 300-meter intermediate. Tanner Stived was the other Tiger picking up double wins for the hosts in he 800 meters (2:03.69), and in a leg of the 3,200-meter relay. Garrett Hall, Nate Knecht, and Andrew Potter accompanied Stiver for the eight-lap relay finishing in 8:57.52.
Sam Lechlitner (1600m 4:45.26) picked up the additional Warsaw win in the oval.
Additional second place finishes among the remaining running events included Jeremy Johnson (400m 54.09 sec.), Blake Keene (300m hurdles 49.56 sec) and Harrison Phipps (3200m 10:21.4). Third place finishes in the 800-meter run (Hall, 2:13.6), the 400 meters ((Nathan Dailey, 55.61 sec.) and the 200 meters (Christian Malagon, 24.8 sec.) rounded out the Tigers’ scoring on the track.
The Tigers were dominant and deep among the five field events, sweeping the long jump and the discus, taking the top two spots in the shot put, and winning the high jump (Cameron Harness 5’8”).
Less than six inches separated Johnson (19’1.5”), German Flores-Ortega (18’9.5’ second place), and Tucker Curtis (18’7.75” third) in the Tiger long jump sweep. Curtis added a second-place finish in the pole vault (11’), followed by Morgan Johnston (10’6”).
Will Wells (138’8”) led the way for Warsaw in the discus sweep, followed by Colton Wampler (123’3”), and Trace Stookey (118’5”). Stookey finished first in the shot put (45’9”) followed by Wells (42’9.75”).
The Tigers will travel to Wawasee high school Thursday April 22 for a 5:30 start in a double NLC dual meet against the Warriors and the Northridge Raiders.
Baseball drops close game to Vikings
The Warsaw Tigers’ and the Huntington North Vikings’ baseball squads each featured strong pitching, but the Vikings took the late lead in a 2-1 win over the Tigers at Warsaw’s Tiger Athletic Complex.
The Vikings broke a 1-1 tie in the top of the sixth inning, scoring on a stolen base. The guests drew first blood in the opening inning when pitcher Austin Oswalt was at the plate with two runners on base on and no outs. Oswalt managed to drive in a run although he grounded into a double play.
The Tigers responded in the bottom of the second inning with a Joey Springer solo homer to knot the contest at one run apiece.
Warsaw’s Sam Justice, despite picking up the loss, pitched a complete game, allowing two runs on five hits, striking out two Vikings. Khareus Miller had Warsaw’s other base hit, and Alex Light’s defensive play (ten putouts) led the way for the Tigers’ error-free outing.
Huntington North, however, used three pitchers, Oswalt, Foster McDonald, and Cam McCarver to strike out 11 Tigers. Cruz Fuentes led Huntington’s batters with a 2-3 evening at the plate.
Tiger golfers pick up three match wins
The Warsaw boys’ golf team picked up wins over three opponents on two different evenings this week. The Tigers traveled to Elcona Country Club and edged the host Northridge Raiders by four strokes 167-171 and leaving behind Mishawaka Marian (209).
Northridge’s Brock Reschly was the match medalist with 38 strokes on Elcona’s par-36 front nine. The Tigers, however, had more balance than the rest of the Raider quartet. Aiden Bowell finished closely behind for second overall with 40 strokes, followed by Tucker Carlile (41), Jack Yeager and Ben Brander (43 strokes apiece). Jaxson Gould finished his outing with 45 strokes.
The Tiger JV linksters took their match with 186 strokes followed by Northridge (207) and Marian (228). Seth Hildebrand (43), Lewis Turley (47), Will Hall and Dylan Barkey (48 each), and Austin Craig (54) hit the links for Warsaw.
Warsaw moved to 3-0 finishing the week with a win over Fort Wayne Canterbury 159-188. Bowell and Hildebrand (39 strokes) led the way followed by Carlile (40), and Brander (41). Yeager and Gould (42 and 46 strokes respectively) rounded out the none-hole match for Warsaw.
The Warsaw JV Tigers also took home a win over Canterbury 181-221. Hall (39), Turley (45), Craig (48), Barkey (49), David Lindquist (53) and Keller Bailey (57) moved the JV Tigers to 3-0.
Warsaw’s varsity squad is hosting the Don Dicken Classic this morning at Stonehenge while the JV golfers travel to the Rochester invitational.
The Triton Trojans golf team remained undefeated in the Hoosier North Athletic Conference winning big 174-260 over Culver Community on the par-35 front nine at Rozella Ford Golf Course on Thursday.
There was a three-way tie for the match medalist at 42 strokes each among Cole McKinney, John Gardner, and Breylon Wareham. Gavin Butler rounded out the Trojan’s scoring turning in a 52-stroke finish.
