Aaron Greene took the loss for the hosts in 2 1/3 innings, but the senior Trine commit threw six strikeouts before taking a seat for the evening.
The Tigers drew first blood on an Alex Light RBI single in the first inning. Valley, however, moved ahead for good with a three-run third inning (RBI single by Bernicky, 2 RBI single by Prater). Light finished the night 2-3 at the plate with three stolen bases. Warsaw ran the basepaths aggressively stealing seven bases altogether in the loss.
Valley’s ace, Owen Kirchenstien, picked up the win, and allowed two runs on two hits while striking out eight Tiger batters in five innings on the mound. Derek Estep, in relief, took the mound and the win for the final two innings throwing four strikeouts, and giving up one run on two hits.
Softball Tigers still looking for first win
The Warsaw Tigers softball team opened its regular season with two five-inning losses in two nights, 13-3 at the hands of the East Noble Knights on Tuesday, and 11-0 to the Carroll Chargers Wednesday night.
“We hit a buzzsaw this week,” Tiger coach Kevin Dishman remarked. “We’ll see Snider and Saturday and hopefully pick up two wins to put this all behind us.”
Each loss had one thing in common: one big inning where each opponent scored at least four runs before their first out.
East Noble scored nine runs in the third inning spraying eight hits in the Tuesday night fray. 15 batters took to the plate before the Tigers put the Knights away for the inning. East Noble’s Maleah Hampshire reached base on all four at-bats, hitting 2-3, walking, and reaching base on an error. She scored three runs including a solo homer to open the second inning. She was 2-3 with a walk.
Warsaw had four hits in the contest, but they made them count. The speedy Holder twins, freshmen Mak and Nat, scored one run each leading off their respective innings. Mak reached first base on a routine grounder while Nat sprinted to first base on a well-executed bunt.
Tiger catcher Avery Sleeth hit a two-run homer bringing Mak Holder with her to home plate in the third inning. Shortstop Lindsey Bradley had the fourth Warsaw hit in the opening inning.
Carroll sophomore pitcher Shaelyn Peters turned in a dominant performance on the mound in Wednesday’s 11-0 loss to Carroll. Peters struck out seven Tigers, allowed only three hits, and hit 2-3 to help her cause.
The Chargers’ opened action with five runs in the top of the first, one run in the second and third innings, and crossed the plate four times in the top of the fifth inning to put an early end to the contest. The victors sent three pitches beyond the outfield fence.
Pitcher Tori Tackett, who took the loss in both contests, senior Meg McKenzie and freshman Nat Holder all hit singles for the Tigers.
Dishman’s young team, with three freshmen starting on Wednesday, looked better fielding than they did the previous night, particularly the Tiger infield.
“Top-to-bottom, Carroll could hit,” Dishman said. “This is the best team they’ve had in years.”
“You see it in their body language,” Dishman added regarding his team’s positive attitude. “They aren’t getting down on themselves. We’re going to learn from these early games and keep getting better as the season keeps moving.”
Warsaw returns to the diamond Saturday morning at 10:00 a.m. for a doubleheader versus Fort Wayne Snider.
