He was born Oct. 29, 1939, in Delaware County, to Frank and Opal Heath. His early schooling was in Muncie. He moved to North Webster in his freshman year of high school and graduated from North Webster High School with the Class of 1957, where he served as class president. Dave enlisted in the Air National Guard in 1957 in Fort Wayne. He attended basic training and then served in the Indiana Air National Guard in fuels at the motor pool in Fort Wayne. In 1962, he was deployed to France during the Berlin Crisis. After returning to the States, he continued his duties in Fort Wayne and had numerous assignments of active duty. Dave retired from the Air Force in 1982 as lieutenant colonel.
Dave graduated from Indiana University with honors, with a degree in marketing and he was a member of Beta Gamma Sigma, the international business honor society. He also served as class president of his graduating class at Indiana University. He was a very proud Air Force veteran, as well as a loyal IU fan. He and his dad had the Heath Gas business in North Webster and built the Suburban Acres Trailer Park.
As an Air Force veteran, Dave was a member of the American Legion in North Webster. He held many positions for the Legion. He was past post commander, finance officer for 22 years, second district commander and served as Northern vice commander for the state of Indiana. He was the alternate national executive committeeman (NEC) for the state of Indiana in 1989-90. He belonged to the 40&8, VFW, Moose, Elks and Eagles. For many years he enjoyed singing with the Shrine Chanters.
His survivors are his wife of 46 years, Susan (Buennagel) Heath, as well as his children, Victoria Rutledge (Tiny), Jim Heath, Mike Heath (Tracy), Jeff Garr (Jennifer) and Robyn Jones. In addition, he is survived by nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.
He was preceded in death by his parents, as well as a daughter, Laura Williams; and a grandson, Patrick Jones.
Celebrations of life were held at the La Maison Condominium in Naples, Fla., on Wednesday, April 14 and will be at the North Webster American Legion at a later date.
