The Warsaw Aviation Board Tuesday agreed to host a veterans event July 23 for veterans in need of services.

Airport Manager Nick King presented the board with the idea after he said he was approached by Goodwill Industries.

“They do a lot of work with veterans groups and one of the programs that they do is a stand down,” King said. “They have not done one at the airport before, but they’ve done them at the fairgrounds, out at Ivy Tech.”

The event is scheduled for 4 to 7 p.m. July 23.

King said the airport would open up the park area for volunteer parking, and veterans who need anything from jeans to socks to toothpaste, there will be vendors in the area outside at eight stations with grab bags.

Other vendor tables will be set up with health and human services resources, including the Bowen Center.

“It’s a way to help veterans who are having anything from financial difficulties to PTSD, you name it,” King said. “They have lots of different services available and a free hot meal for all veterans that show up that afternoon. It’s a way to give back to the local community. ... I think it’s a great idea.”

The board approved the event, and King said COVID-19 safety precautions will be in place, including volunteers wearing masks.

King said Goodwill estimates between 75-250 veterans may show up for the event.

The next Warsaw Aviation Board meeting is 5:15 p.m. May 11 at City Hall.
