Mark Gerald Fick was honored Tuesday by the Kosciusko County Commissioners as the April Veteran of the Month.

Fick was born May 8, 1968, to Ben and Iris Fick. He grew up in Warsaw and graduated from Warsaw Community High School in 1987.

He signed up to serve in the Army in January 1988, just shortly after graduation, and would do his basic training at Fort Benning, Ga.

His first assignment would take him to the 1-35 Armor Battalion 2nd Brigade 1st Armored Division in Erlangen, West Germany. Fick remained there from May 1988 to May 1991.

Then, from June 1991 to 1994, he would receive orders to Fort Campbell, Ky.

He would then receive his 1st Combat Infantry Badge for his service in Desert Storm with the 2nd Battalion 187 Infantry.

From August 1994 to 1995 he was assigned to the 5th Battalion 20 Infantry in South Korea. In June 1995 to 1997, he was reassigned to the 1st Battalion 35th Armored Division stationed in Fort Riley, Kan.

Then, in August 1997 to 1998, he was sent back to South Korea with the 1st Battalion 72nd Armored Division. In September 1998 to 2000, he would be sent to serve at Fort Drum, N.Y., with the 2/22 Infantry Division.

Fick would do his third tour from September 2000-2001 in South Korea with the 2nd and 72nd Infantry.

Fick settled down from his travels while stationed from October 2001 to 2010 at Fort Carson, Colo., with the 3rd Armored Calvary Regiment, where he would be awarded a 2nd Combat Infantry Badge.

His final set of orders from November 2010-2012 would be served at Fort Knox, Ky., with the 1st Army Division, where he would retire on the first of January in 2012 after 24 years of service to the country and United States Army.

Fick is married to his wife, Millie, with whom he has a daughter, Brooke. He also has a granddaughter, Harper.

Fick’s awards include a Bronze Star, Meritorious Service Medal, Good Conduct Medal 8 clusters, Overseas Ribbon 7 clusters, CiB 2, Army Commendation Medal 6 clusters, Army Achievement Medal 7 clusters, Armed Forces Ribbon, Global War on Terrorism Ribbon, Air Assault Badge and he was promoted to Sgt. 1st Class in 2007.

Fick is the director of transportation for Warsaw Community Schools.

WCS Superintendent Dr. David Hoffert, along with every WCS school bus driver, and Fick’s family and friends showed up to support him Tuesday at the courthouse.

“Thank you,” Fick said of the honor. “I’m proud to serve, proud of what I do now, and I’m just so proud.”
