The Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter is the annual local sponsor of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution (DAR) American History Essay Contest.

The American History Essay Contest is available to Kosciusko County school corporation, parochial and home school students in grades five through eight. A winner is selected from each of the four grades to advance to the state level.

The state winner from each grade advances to the divisional level. Divisional winners advance to the national level where the national winners are announced and receive a certificate, medal and a monetary award.

The topic for the 2020-2021 academic year was: March 5, 2020, marks the 250th anniversary of the Boston Massacre, considered to be a pivotal event that paved the way to the American Revolution.  Imagine you are living in Boston and, after witnessing the events of March 5, describe your family’s discussion about the Boston Massacre and what role it played in organizing the colonists against the British king and Parliament.

Gibsen Claxton, daughter of Brett and Julie Claxton, and a student at Lincoln Elementary School, Warsaw, is the author of the essay judged as winner of sixth-grade essays. Gibsen’s essay was forwarded for judging at the Indiana DAR American History Essay Contest level.

Gibsen received a medal from the Agnes Pruyn Chapman DAR Chapter when she was honored for her accomplishment at the March 23 DAR meeting. She will receive a certificate at the school awards program.
