The Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of the National Society of Daughters of the American Revolution announced the DAR Good Citizens for the 2020-21 school year.

Each fall, four Kosciusko County high schools have the opportunity to choose one senior student who exemplifies dependability, service, leadership and patriotism, according to a news release from DAR.

Students may elect to participate in the DAR Good Citizen Scholarship contest by providing a resume, grade transcript, letters of recommendation and write an impromptu, timed essay on the provided topic. This year’s scholarship essay title was “Our American Heritage and Our Responsibility for Preserving It” with the focus question of “How do the combined actions of so many good citizens keep our nation moving forward?”

The DAR Good Citizens are Tucker Carlile, Joy Hanes, Samantha Kolberg and Arika Warren.

Hanes was named Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter DAR Good Citizen by independent, non-DAR judges. Her portfolio was sent for competition in the state DAR Good Citizen Scholarship contest. Hanes is the daughter of Mark and Lori Hanes, Winona Lake. At Lakeland Christian Academy, she is student body president, National Honor Society secretary, Red Cross representative, a peer tutor, teacher assistant and a Fellowship of Christian Athletes leader. Hanes received the leadership award for varsity soccer and is girls basketball team manager. Her junior year she was a member of the Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy. She has enjoyed her employment at Pottery Bayou in Winona Lake Village. Her future plans are to attend college and major in English, possibly teaching English as a second language, or becoming a professor or author.

Carlile is the son of Hunter and Cara Carlile, Winona Lake. At Warsaw Community High School, he is a member of National Honor Society, social media manager of Key Club and Boomerang Backpacks lead student volunteer. He is on the school golf team and participates in intramural basketball. Carlile enjoys working as a water ski instructor at Sharky’s and as an intern Realtor assistant at Brian Peterson Group and more. Future plans are to get a four-year university degree and a real estate license.

Kolberg is the daughter of Eric and Heidi Kolberg, Milford. At Wawasee High School, Kolberg is a member of National Honor Society, is senior class secretary in student council and plays girls varsity soccer. She has organized workshops and coached youth soccer, raised money for Ronald McDonald House and several local charities, helped at a food pantry and other community service projects and volunteered at a primary and general election precinct. Kolberg enjoys working at the Milford Public Library, babysitting, tutoring elementary through middle school students and helping with the family landscape business. Her plan for the future is to double major in elementary education and accounting.

Warren is the daughter of Amber Warren, Warsaw. She is a student at Tippecanoe Valley High School, where she is a member of National Honor Society, Sunshine Society, secretary of Student Council, KEYS and Future Educators of America. She has been a volleyball and women’s basketball manager. She was a member of the Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy and Social Emotional Learning Leaders. She enjoys 4-H Junior Leaders, being a teacher assistant, tutoring and working at Java Jacks. Her future plans are to obtain a bachelor’s and master’s degree in math.

These four students were honored at the March 23 meeting of the Agnes Pruyn Chapman Chapter of the National Society of DAR, at which time they each received the DAR Good Citizen pin and wallet card. Certificates and scholarship checks will be presented at school awards programs.
