John Robert Walsh, 38, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 2:26 p.m. March 31 and faces charges for theft, a Level 6 felony; and theft, a Class A misdemeanor.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed July 23 in Kosciusko Superior Court III, on April 14, 2020, Warsaw police were called to the Stock+Field store by a manager who said a man – later identified as Walsh – came into the store claiming to be a person who had an account with the city of Huntington.
The man purchased $2,294.06 on the city’s account, according to court papers.
However, the owner of the account said he was not at the store nor did he make any such purchases, and video surveillance shows the man who did make the purchases was not the owner.
Warsaw police posted a surveillance footage photo on their department Facebook page asking for the public’s help in identifying the suspect. That is when, according to court papers, WPD was contacted by a police officer with the Marion Police Department who advised they believe the subject is Walsh.
Police said the surveillance image captured at the store matched Walsh’s BMV photo.
A week later, WPD got a call from an employee at Walmart who said Walsh was at the store. Police went the store and made contact with Walsh and told him he needed to contact a WPD detective.
According to court papers, Walsh initially agreed to speak with detectives; however, several attempts to reach him went unanswered. Furthermore, Walsh eventually texted the detective and claimed he had moved to Los Angeles and he would pay back the store.
Police told him that was not an option, and he was eventually arrested.
Walsh’s bond was set at $7,400.
