By Chip Davenport-
The first big play was a 22-yard touchdown on an interception return by senior cornerback Caden Silveus at the 7:50 mark in the first quarter. The score came 15 seconds after the Tigers’ first score, a 5-yard run by Aaron Greene. The Tigers were in front 14-0.
Mason Martz added a 3-yard TD run to push the Tiger lead to 21-0 with 10:11 left in the second quarter.
The next big play followed two unanswered Goshen TDs leaving the hosts with the ball with only 22 seconds to play in the first half. The Tigers had the ball on their own 33-yard line when junior A-back Julius Jones took the pitch from Aaron Greene, then lofted the ball to a streaking Luke Adamiec, who did not break stride on his way to a 67-yard touchdown catch with 4.5 seconds remaining in the half.
This is the second week in a row Adamiec snared a pass for paydirt to favorably change his team’s momentum. The teams headed to the locker room with the hosts on top 28-14.
The senior split end said, “I saw the play call, and I was nervous. I got a perfect ball from the running back. He got me right in stride. It was a touchdown we needed”
The Redhawks appeared to regain their momentum at the start of the second half. They moved the ball to the red zone on the opening drive that moved all the way to the red zone before junior defensive end Aiden Binkerd sacked Goshen QB Colin Turner at the 24-yard line forcing a fourth down. Isaac Sawatzky missed the 41-yard field goal attempt,
Warsaw responded with another touchdown run by workhorse B-back Juan Jaramillo, a five-yard plunge. The extra point was wide right, and the Tigers, now in command 34-14, maintained their lead for the rest of the evening.
The Redhawks must have read the Dylan Thomas poem, “Do Not Go Softly into That Good Night” because they certainly did not.
Their aforementioned two first half two scores were on a 6-yard by back-up quarter back Quinn Bechtel (4:42, 2nd stanza), and a 24-yard pass from Turner to Brayden Hinkel with 22.7 seconds left in the half.
Goshen wasn’t finished chiseling away at the Tigers’ lead, Warsaw’s sophomore B-back German Flores-Ortega pounded through the line for a 1-yard score, increasing the lead to 41-14 when the guests were determined to make it a closer contest. The Redhawks added a 7-yard run by Turner, and another score by Bechtel to wrap up the night’s score, 41-28.
Warsaw began the contest with aggressive pass coverage among it’s back seven, but Goshen exploited the defense with hitch-and-go patterns and open passes to the left flat to accumulate 276 yards in the air paired with 54 rushing yards; 330 total yards together.
“Credit goes to them. They played really, really hard, and they have a pretty darn good passing attack,” said Warsaw head coch Bart Curtis. “It did not go the way we thought it was going to go by any stretch of the imagination, so I’m not going to pour sugar on asparagus. We can’t make mistakes in coverage that we’re making at this point of the year.”
Warsaw had trouble taking care of the football throughout the game, losing two fumbles. Curtis offered his thoughts on ball security. Triple option football requires the ball remain tightly against the runner, and the ability to limit visible exposure.
“We did not take care of the football from the jump. We were swingin’ it out there. You could see the ball!”
Despite the obvious focus areas the Tigers will address in practice this week, the offense rolled up 401 rushing yards led by Jones (11 carries, 170 yards with several big outside runs), Aaron Greene (10-74), Jaramillo (14-54) and Patrick Zollinger (3-53).
The win puts the orange and black at 5-1 overall and 4-0 in the NLC. The Redhawks fall to 1-2 overall, 0-2 in the NLC.
Warsaw travels to Wawasee (2-4, 0-4) at 7 p.m. Friday to battle for the “W” trophy.
