Due to the COVID-19 restrictions, patrons had been able to access the meetings digitally; however, an internet outage prevented a live broadcast.
The board held a public hearing on the proposed 2021 budget, bus replacement fund and the capital projects fund. The board approved both the bus replacement and capital projects plans. Adoption of the budget is considered at a later date to allow patrons to ask for clarifications. There were no comments at the public hearing.
It was noted later in the regular meeting that a debt service bond payment from 2012 will be paid off in 2021. The tax rate is expected to be similar to the current rate of 2020. Plans are to purchase two new buses in 2021 with one bus, being less than 12 years, to be replaced due to maintenance concerns.
The corporation’s technology department is in the process of inventorying outdated devices that will be offered to the public for sale.
Superintendent Jeremy Riffle extended his appreciation for the teachers and other staff for their dedication in adjusting to restrictions for the COVID pandemic. Approximately seven percent of the students enrolled at the elementary level are being instructed virtually and there are 36 students from the junior senior high school receiving digital instruction.
The board voted unanimously to approve offering breakfast and lunch to all students at no charge. The FDA has extended funding to all Indiana schools opting to participate until the funds are exceeded. According to Riffle, Triton students should be able to receive the meals until at least Dec. 31.
Riffle said items from the old gym will be auctioned on Oct. 3 at 10 a.m. He went on to say that demolition of the building will begin on the first day of the fall break, Oct. 19.
