Zachary Alan Naish, 28, of 7889 E. CR 1000N, Syracuse, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 11:57 a.m. Wednesday and faces charges for leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a Level 6 felony; and institutional criminal mischief, a Level 6 felony.
Shalee Renee Mangun, 28, homeless, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 11:58 a.m. Wednesday and faces charges for aiding/inducing/causing of leaving the scene of a personal injury accident, a Level 6 felony; and assisting a criminal, a Level 6 felony.
According to the probable cause affidavit filed Sept. 13 in Kosciusko Superior Court III, on Aug. 8 police responded to the North Webster United Methodist Church and spoke with church representatives who said the church bell had been knocked over, causing damage to the bell, bricks and structure. The cost to repair the bell that is used during religious ceremonies is between $10,000 and $20,000, according to court papers.
Police were provided security video footage by the church and it showed a black Ford Explorer pull into the parking lot. Mangun exits the passenger side of the vehicle, looks around, and then Naish, the driver, gets out and looks around. The two then get back into the vehicle, and Naish drives forward, slamming into the church bell and structure. The airbags deploy, and Naish is then seen helping Mangun exit the passenger seat. Mangun is visibly injured from the crash, according to the affidavit. Mangun then gets in the driver’s seat and the two leave the area.
According to court papers, Mangun is the owner of the SUV. Neither gave an explanation to police about why the crash occurred.
Mangun’s bond was set at $5,120. Naish’s was set at $6,200.
