Triton Rolls Early In Big Win Over Culver Community

By Chip Davenport-

BOURBON - Triton only needed 16 plays, 238 yards and less than eight minutes of the game’s 24-minute first half to take a commanding 34-8 lead at halftime over the Culver Community Cavaliers. The boys from Bourbon scored on each of their five first half possessions and defeated their Hoosier North Athletic Conference (HNAC) foes in the Trojans’ home opener 48-8.

Triton fans were energized by a Senior Night recognition ceremony for all fall sports and band participants prior to the gridders’ first home game. Tailback Hunter McIntyre, one of six Trojan seniors honored, opened the scoring with a 25-yard run to the outside followed by the first of freshman quarterback Cole Shively’s six extra points making the score 7-0 in favor of the hosts at the 6:40 mark in the first frame.

The blue and gold took advantage of good field position throughout the first half, striking quickly on each possession. Freshman tailback, Anthony Schuh, moved into the spotlight on Senior Night scoring the host’s next three touchdowns on runs of 16 yards (2:59 1st quarter), 18 yards (11:23, 2nd), and a 47-yard dash. He finished the evening with 97 yards on 6 carries.

The Cavaliers lone score came while trailing 21-0 with 8:27 left in the first half when Tucker Fisher found halfback Emiliano Ortiz for a wide-open 47-yard TD pass. The tandem connected on another pass for the 2-point conversion. Schuh’s third TD run and a 42-yard touchdown pass from Shively to senior Lucas Cabrera set the halftime score at 34-8. The wingback finished the night with 40 yards on two carries to go along with his TD catch.

An elder Schuh brother, Trojan sophomore Trace Schuh, was not to be outdone. He pounded through the Culver defensive front for four rushes in the third stanza’s opening drive, capping it off with a 10-yard score, moving the hosts ahead 41-8. He added 7 totes for 66 yards to the team’s rushing efforts. McIntyre, closed out the blue and gold’s scoring by pounding in a 4-yard score for his second TD, finishing with 40 yards on 8 rushes.

Triton entered the contest scoring only 12.3 points per game, but the offense finished with 33 runs for 283 yards while Shively added a 3-for-5, 70 yard passing performance: 353 total yards for the win.

Defensively, the hosts were facing one of their biggest opposing offensive lines to date, but D-linemen,  seniors Nate Amsden (sack, fumble recovery), Jeremiah Ferrell (downed punt on the one-yard line), junior Cam Fairchild (fourth-down stop) and sophomore Caleb Lemler tore through the trenches to snuff Culver’s vaunted T-formation backfield inside rushing game.

“We learned a lot from last week (41-0 loss to Bremen), and worked hard this week to improve our blocking,” Triton head coach Rodney Younis said. “On defense we stayed low against a larger line to get into their backfield. We are looking forward to our facing (state power) Pioneer next week. It’s great to have a challenge like that program every year.”

The Trojans will host the perennial small-school power, traveling to Bourbon from Royal Center, next Friday at 7 p.m.

The win moved the Trojans to 3-1 overall, 2-0 in conference. The Cavaliers fell to 1-3 overall and 0-3 in league.  The IHSAA mercy rule took effect with 4:32 left in the third quarter.
