The library is not only celebrating the opening of its newest community areas, but more than 100 years of changes since the library made the corner of Front and Maple streets its permanent home. Through the generosity of Alan Fox, whose gift helped fund the most recent building project, the library has continued its legacy of serving the community by responding to changing needs.
Fox’s gift also continues a long legacy of support from individuals, businesses and benefactors.
In 1919, six years after a group of citizens determined the community needed a library, SWCPL relocated to the little white house that served as the library for more than five decades.
Needing some major repairs, the little white house was replaced 50 years ago, in 1970, with a brand-new building thanks to a gift from Fred Graham. Graham’s gift set a precedent for the future. Thirty years ago, in 1990, Theodore Schultz gifted his gem collection and funds to help expand the library to the east. Thirteen years ago, citizens and businesses came together to raise funds that, combined with grants, expanded the building to the north. That project provided access to the basement via an elevator and expanded the children’s room.
SWCPL is celebrating this most recent expansion project with an open house from 1 to 4 p.m. on Sunday, September 27. Guests are invited to tour the library, learn what the most recent expansion offers to our community, enjoy refreshments and enter for a chance to win door prizes. Masks and social distancing will be required.
