Joene Ladeen Cover, 88, entered the presence of the Lord at 9:17 a.m. on Sunday, Sept. 13, 2020.

She passed away at Grace Village Retirement Community in Winona Lake.

She and her twin sister were born on Feb. 16, 1932 in Tulsa, Okla., to Sadie Stewart Toon and William Riley Toon.  On July 3, 1953, she was married to Robert James Cover Sr. in Tracy, Calif.  They shared 64 years of marriage together before he passed away on Dec. 22, 2017.

Joene spent her life spreading the word of her Lord in everything she did.  She and her husband, Bob, spent 10 years as missionaries in Argentina from 1960 -1970.  Joene taught Spanish, as well as English as a second language, in various schools in California and Indiana. After a number of years in California, they moved to Warsaw, where she eventually taught Spanish at Grace College in Winona Lake.

She always felt the calling to serve and enjoyed mentoring younger women and taught Sunday school for many years as a longtime member of Conservative Grace Brethren Church in Warsaw. Joene was always good with her hands and was great with detail work. She loved homemaking, growing flowers, especially roses, reading, singing, any kind of sewing, especially quilting, knitting and crossword and jigsaw puzzles. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother and friend to many. Family was very important to Joene, but she would most want to be remembered for her steadfast faith in her Savior, Jesus Christ.

She will be lovingly remembered by her two sons: Robert (Lisa) Cover Jr., Warsaw; David (Sandi) Cover, Richland, Mich.; and two daughters: Viki (John) Rife, Warsaw; Lynette Lowe, Okeechobee, Fla. Also surviving are her beloved eight grandchildren: Kelly (Justin) Bowers, Oceanside, Calif.; Laura (Nathan) Hoffard, Las Vegas, Nev.; James (Amy) Rife, Jefferson, Maine; Robert (Michelle) Cover III, Warsaw; Timothy (Brittney) Cover, Warsaw; Ladeen (Doug) Zielasko, Warsaw; Stephen Cover, Dayton, Ohio; Kristine (Caleb) Bowen, Gull Lake, Mich.; great-grandchildren: Natalie and Luke Bowers; Ben, Micah and Jacob Hoffard; Carver and Eva Rife; Emma, Abigail, Isabelle and Moses Cover; Valarie, Elijah and Elana Zielasko; as well as two brothers: Glenn (Judy) Toon and Terry (Janice) Toon; and seven sisters: Dovie, Virginia, Dolly, Molly, Carolyn, Marilyn (John) and Erma (Gary).

She was preceded in death by her parents; husband, Bob, four sisters; one brother; her great-granddaughter, Sadie Elizabeth Rife in 2011; and her son-in-law, James Lowe.

Visitation will be held from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 16 at Redpath-Fruth Funeral Home, 225 Argonne Road, Warsaw. Joene’s life will be celebrated with a service immediately following visitation at 1 p.m. and officiated by Chaplain Bryan Benjamin. Burial will follow with a graveside service at Oakwood Cemetery of Warsaw.
