ELKHART — Warsaw’s Audrey Grimm continued to be grim news for the rest of the Northern Lakes Conference on Thursday, and her Tiger teammates were none too shabby, either.

With Grimm scoring all three goals, with the Warsaw offense peppering its way to 14 on-target shots, with the midfield controlling possession and with the defense allowing Concord just one threatening shot all night, the Tigers rolled to a 3-0 girls soccer victory over the host Minutemen.

“Audrey Grimm had a fantastic game and I was really proud of how we all moved the ball,” Warsaw coach Jon Hoover said. “We’ve been able to possess well, but we haven’t been able to possess as well in pockets as we have tonight.”

Warsaw improved to 6-3 overall and 5-0 in the NLC. Concord dropped to 4-3-1 and 2-1.

As is typically the case, the Tigers and Northridge (2-0) are now the league’s last two unbeatens. They’ll face off Oct. 1 in Middlebury. Warsaw’s only other remaining NLC game is Sept. 26 against Wawasee.

“We have to take each team we play one by one and not overlook anyone,” Grimm said, “but we are excited to play Northridge when that one comes.”

Grimm notched her second straight hat trick — she also had one Tuesday at Mishawaka — and improved her season output to 13 goals, exactly half her team’s total.

All but one of her goals, and each of her four assists, have come in the Tigers’ five conference games.

“That free kick on the first goal was just a rip,” Hoover said of Grimm’s 30-yard, left-wing laser over a wall of four defenders less than two minutes into the game.

The senior striker and Taylor University commit doubled the lead to 2-0 midway through the first half when Macy Wayne grounded a perfect up-the-gut pass to an in-stride Grimm for a close-range tally.

Grimm’s final goal came with 13:09 left in the contest on an aerial cross from Corrissa Koontz.

“I think we’re all playing well as a team,” Grimm said. “We’re moving the ball and finishing.”

The Minutemen’s lone genuine opportunity of the night came midway through the second half when junior standout Jada Swanson powered through a couple of layers of defense and lined a shot that struck the crossbar.

“Concord’s a really good team and we took them very seriously,” Hoover said. “We needed to so we could take another step. We wanted to keep our destiny (in the NLC) in our own hands, and this moves us another step closer.”

Warsaw and Northridge tied for the league crown last year at 6-0-1, marking the fifth straight season they’ve closed as the NLC’s top two clubs.

Over that time, the Raiders have won three titles outright and the Tigers one, that being in 2015.

Over those five years heading into this one, Northridge had gone 30-0-5 in conference play and Warsaw 29-3-3. The Raiders’ mark includes 2-0-3 against the Tigers.

Get To Know The Team: Warsaw Captains Q&A
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of going to a Warsaw football practice and speaking with four of the team’s five captains. With so much having been written in recent weeks about their performance on the field, and rightfully so, I wanted to peel back the curtain a bit and ask them some questions about themselves. Each of the four players were asked the same eight questions. Below are each of their answers.

Town of Claypool
