A New Haven man is facing multiple charges for allegedly trying to steal a vehicle but was caught by the owner and held at gunpoint until police arrived.

Daiton Slone, 32, of New Haven, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 1:50 a.m. Sept. 2 and faces charges for possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony; theft, a Class A misdemeanor; unauthorized entry of a motor vehicle, a Class B misdemeanor; and possession of paraphernalia, a Class C misdemeanor.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Tuesday in Kosciusko Circuit Court, on Sept. 2 deputies with the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office responded to a report of an auto theft.

Upon arrival at the residence, officers found Slone lying on the ground in the driveway after Slone was found by the homeowner in the front seat of the man’s vehicle. The homeowner held Slone at gunpoint until law enforcement arrived, according to the affidavit.

When police spoke to the homeowners, the woman told police she saw Slone coming up her driveway but figured it was a solicitor. That is until a few minutes later when she looked back outside and saw Slone inside her silver 2018 Hyundai Sport.

The woman told her husband, who then went out and held Slone at gunpoint.

When police spoke with Slone, according to court papers, Slone said he was asked by a man to steal the vehicle and Slone would get $200 for doing it. However, Slone said he found two $1 bills in the vehicle and decided he’d not steal the car but rather go get something to eat.

When police searched Slone, according to the affidavit, they located two glass smoking devices that tested positive for methamphetamine.

According to court records, on Aug. 24 KCSO deputies responded to a fight at a Syracuse park and arrested Slone for possession of methamphetamine, a Level 6 felony; and possession of a controlled substance, a Class A misdemeanor, after drugs were found on his person.

Slone’s bond in the vehicle case was set at $5,250.
