Warsaw Kickers Get To Work In First Half

As people everywhere celebrated Labor Day weekend away from their jobs, Warsaw varsity soccer teams went to work Saturday - particularly in the first half.

Hosting a doubleheader - the girls against Argos and the boys against Fort Wayne Snider - the Lady Tigers and Tigers built sizeable leads in the first 40 minutes and rode it to victory in their respective matches.

Warsaw’s girls squad, playing nearly two hours prior to its originally scheduled time, scored three times prior to the intermission and beat the visiting Lady Dragons 4-1. Argos scored its lone goal late in the 80-minute contest.

On the boys side, the host Tigers led 5-0 at halftime en route to a 6-0 victory over the Panthers.

“We moved some people around, we played with a new formation that we want to use in the future, so it was nice to see us move the ball,” said Warsaw girls coach Jon Hoover.

“It think we possessed really, really well today. We’re working as team on possessing in the right spaces and getting in certain spaces. I felt like everybody got a lot of minutes today and everybody did a great job when they stepped on the field.”

Seniors Audrey Grimm and Elizabeth stone, and sophomores Bonnie Hampton and Rylee Burns each scored a goal in the win, which was the Lady Tigers’ fourth victory in their last five matches and improved them to 4-3 on the season.

After graduating the program’s all-time leading scorer in Abby Steffensmeier, Hoover sees this year’s Lady Tiger squad as more balanced.

“I’m pleased with the way we scored, because they were good finishes, they were clinical finishes,” said Hoover. “Their keeper made some great saves, but I like the way we scored, it wasn’t just running in and scoring, it was movin the ball as a unit and then finishing on the back end of it.

“We graduated Abby Steffensmeier, and she led our program in scoring, in history. It was always a question of whether or not we’d be able to get the goals … I think this team is much more balanced than last year, and I think anybody on the roster can step on the field and score. It’s been good for us to have everybody step into a position and realize that we can’t lean on one person. Everybody’s got their responsibility, and you’re seeing people step up.”

On the boys side, Warsaw’s 6-0 win snapped a three-match skid and improved first-year Tiger coach Ryan Burgher’s squad to 2-5-1 on the season.

Get To Know The Team: Warsaw Captains Q&A
Earlier this week, I had the privilege of going to a Warsaw football practice and speaking with four of the team’s five captains. With so much having been written in recent weeks about their performance on the field, and rightfully so, I wanted to peel back the curtain a bit and ask them some questions about themselves. Each of the four players were asked the same eight questions. Below are each of their answers.

Kosciusko County

Town of Claypool
