A third cremation garden has been created at Oakwood Cemetery.

The cremation garden is near the entrance of Garden of Angels on the south side of the cemetery, said Oakwood Cemetery sexton Hal Heagy during Thursday’s Oakwood Cemetery Board of Regents meeting.

The new cremation garden will be used while waiting for the completion of plans for the fourth cremation garden in block 33-3/4 and the construction of it.

The reason for the new cremation garden was simple.

“Cremation Garden 2 is full,” Heagy said. The last lot was sold a week or so ago.

All lots for Cremation Garden 3 will be 5 feet by 5 feet. Three burials are allowed in each lot. The maximum foundation length for stones is 48 inches.

For stones, Heagy said the cemetery doesn’t dictate the size of the stones. Oakwood simply gives people the parameters to work with.

The cemetery also raised the price per lot. It used to be $150, but is now $200 for residents. For nonresidents, it’s $250.

Beaver Dam Tree Service will be cutting down two trees and cutting out damage to others. Heagy said they’ve already taken down 14 trees from the cemetery.

Beaver Dam Tree Service will also climb some trees as some of the trees at the cemetery have dead limbs and the trees are so big, Heagy referred to them as “widow makers,” and said the branches are so big, they’re almost trees themselves. They are to be removed for safety reasons.

Heagy said the company can’t get to all the work this year, but the cemetery has money in the 2021 budget to get the work done. He said there is $16,000 in next year’s budget to deal with tree removal, but he doesn’t think all of that money will be used.

The right side of the front gates of the cemetery were recently repaired. Heagy said the right side wouldn’t close all the way. A board needed to be replaced.

The next meeting is at 5 p.m. Oct. 1.
