ELKHART COUNTY – A Leesburg man was booked in the Elkhart County Jail Thursday to face fraud charges stemming from 2017.

Curtis Wayne Hunley, 47, of 41 EMS T16B Lane, Leesburg, was booked in the Elkhart County Jail Thursday and faces two Level 6 felony charges for fraud and one Class A misdemeanor theft charge.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Feb. 12, 2019, in Elkhart Superior Court IV, on Oct. 20, 2017, a woman went to the Nappanee Police Department to report that her debit card was used several times between Sept. 1 and Oct. 20, 2017.

The woman told police that she was at work when this happened and the charges are all from a Marathon gas station and a local liquor store. When police went to the gas station and the liquor store to obtain video surveillance, the woman identified Hunley as the man in the videos – a longtime friend of hers, she said, according to court papers.

Hunley allegedly used the debit card multiple times to make purchases – all less than $20 – at the gas station and at the liquor store, for a total of $377.44 during the time span.

According to court records, Hunley had been cooperating with the court to resolve the case, however, he failed to appear at a hearing on Aug. 27, and an arrest warrant was issued.

His bond was set at $3,000.
