Happy Labor Day! Sen. Young Recognizes Hardworking Hoosiers

There’s no newspaper Monday because of the holiday, but there will be one Tuesday. If something should come up before then, there’s always our website, www.timesuniononline.com, or our Facebook page. But hopefully, it’s a calm weekend.
U.S. Senator Todd Young (R-Ind.) on Friday released the following statement in advance of Labor Day: “During this time of uncertainty, it is especially important that we recognize the hardworking Hoosiers whose contributions make Indiana great. Thanks to these women and men, Indiana has maintained national leadership in manufacturing and agriculture, and our workforce is among the best in the nation. I will continue working to provide relief to those who are struggling during this challenging time, and I will not stop fighting for Hoosiers.”
YOUNG DRIVERS – Also on Friday, Young announced that a new pilot program modeled after his DRIVE-Safe Act is being proposed by the U.S. Department of Transportation’s Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration (FMCSA). A notice was sent to the Federal Register this morning requesting public comment on the proposed pilot program, which would allow 18 to 20-year old commercial driver’s license holders to operate commercial motor vehicles in interstate commerce while taking part in an apprenticeship program.
“Like my DRIVE-Safe Act, this proposed pilot program will develop a responsible pathway to safely train more drivers, create new career opportunities for young Hoosiers and substantially raise training standards to ensure safety on the road,” said Young. “Indiana is known to many as the Crossroads of America, and having responsible drivers on our roads is critical to the safe transportation of people and goods. While this proposed pilot program works its way through the comment period, I will continue pushing for the passage of my DRIVE-Safe Act to codify this important change.”
Young introduced the DRIVE-Safe Act in February 2019 along with Senators Jon Tester (D-Mont.), Tom Cotton (R-Ark.), Jim Inhofe (R-Okla.), Angus King (I-Maine), Joe Manchin (D-W.V.) and Jerry Moran (R-Kan.). Since then, nearly 30 additional Senators have cosponsored the bill.
POLICE PLEDGE – Heritage Action for America, a conservative grassroots organization, on Friday announced Young, Sen. Mike Braun, Rep. Jim Banks, Rep. Larry Buchson and Rep. Greg Pence have signed Heritage Action’s Police Pledge.
“Indiana’s law enforcement officers put their lives on the line to protect our communities and they deserve our support. Defunding the police won’t bring about the changes we need, but instead will only leave our officers unsupported and our communities unprotected. That’s why I’m proud to sign Heritage Action’s Police Pledge,” said Young.
“Our brave men and women of law enforcement put their lives on the line every day to keep us safe,” said Braun. “While Democrats are calling to defund our first line of defense as our cities devolve into lawlessness, I’m proud to sign the Heritage Action pledge to stand with America’s Police and to oppose any bill, resolution or movement to ‘Defund the Police.’”
The pledge calls on Americans to “stand with America’s police and pledge to oppose any bill, resolution or movement to ‘Defund the Police.’” Heritage Action launched the pledge Aug. 13 at a law enforcement town hall with Vice President Mike Pence, Acting Secretary of Homeland Security Chad Wolf and Sen. Joni Ernst. The pledge has been signed by numerous elected officials including Minority Leader Kevin McCarthy, Whip Steve Scalise, candidates for office and nearly 50,000 citizens, including former Ambassador Nikki Haley.
CENSUS – According to State Reps. Doug Miller (R-Elkhart) and Curt Nisly (R-Milford), 2020 census responses are critical to future federal funding in local communities, and Hoosiers should respond now if they have not already done so.
Door-to-door visits are taking place around the country to remind residents to complete their 2020 Census forms. Miller said Indiana is ranked 10th in the nation for total responses collected, but the Census Bureau is still waiting to hear from approximately 1 in every 10 households.
Miller encourages residents to visit 2020census.gov to fill out the census online. Hoosiers can also call 844-330-2020 or mail back the questionnaire sent to households.
Census takers have also begun visiting nonresponding households to ensure every resident is counted.
"Hoosiers have less than a month to complete the census," Nisly said. "Ensuring everyone in our area is counted will help local and state leaders better understand what communities need and how we can provide the best support for them."
According to Nisly, billions of dollars in federal funding to support education, housing, health and public safety are on the line as this data impacts strategic planning decisions about statewide job training, locations of new businesses and public transportation projects.
Self-responses are due by Sept. 30.
