Boggs Is Kosciusko’s September Veteran Of The Month

As Kosciusko County Veterans Affairs Officer Rich Maron read the biography of Danny J. Boggs, the September Veteran of the Month, Boggs took the opportunity to make jokes.

His humor included that he made up receiving his medals, which drew laughter from those in attendance at the county commissioners meeting Tuesday.

Boggs is a decorated Vietnam War veteran.

He was born Jan. 4, 1949, at McDonald’s Hospital in Warsaw to Fred and Lorena Boggs. He grew up in North Webster, graduating from North Webster High School the year before it closed in 1967, according to Maron.

He was drafted into the Vietnam War at 19 and began his service on Feb. 4, 1969.

Boggs was selected to be a squad leader and sent to combat leadership training. He was then given command of 10 men, and they were a part of Company D 2nd of 7th Battalion 1st Air Calvary. The Company goes all the way back to Civil War and horses.

He received two Army Commendation Medals and three Bronze Stars for his meritorious service in Vietnam. Like all Vietnam veterans, Boggs came home with some difficult memories, but also a gratitude that God kept him during his time in Vietnam, Maron said.

Before heading to Vietnam, Boggs came back home and married Diana Swonger. They raised two children, Denny (and wife Melissa) Boggs and Danita (and husband Mike) Kern. He has two grandchildren, Torry and Nash, and one great-grandchild, Ijla.

While Danny and Diana separated and both remarried, they still remain good friends.

Danny is remarried to Tammy.

After Boggs’ return home from Vietnam, he got a job at Zimmer in the maintenance department and continued there for 39 years, retiring in 2007.
