That train had no intentions of stopping.
After Marian had posted 41 points in the first-half alone, the contest would enter the second-half with a running clock as the Vikings’ 2020 season came to a close with a 41-24 loss at Smith-Bibler Memorial Field.
“It’s the best team I’ve seen in five years on film. I knew that coming in, that they were awesome,” said Tippecanoe Valley head football coach Stephen Moriarty. “There is a reason that they beat Penn at home. They are a very talented group. Defensively and offensively, they will be hard to stop.”
Marian (9-0) were dominant, forcing a total of four turnovers—all of which came in the first half. Offensively, their stats were low but skewed, as they had several short-field possessions. Senior quarterback Maddix Bogunia completed 4-of-5 passes for 47 yards and two touchdowns in the win. On the ground, senior running back Malcom Anderson picked up a pair of touchdowns.
Heading into the locker room and seeing a 41-0 deficit on the scoreboard, Moriarty did not want to see this group of seniors and others give up.
“At halftime, we literally sat down on the floor of the locker room and said, ‘O.K., so we’ve got two things that need to happen: We are going to finish like we do like Death Valley football—we are going to finish with pride,” said Moriarty. “‘We are not going to walk to the huddle, we are going to hustle and we are going to go hard. Also, we are going to do it because that is the way we started.’ I think we did that, and that made me very proud of the seniors and the rest of the team came out and fought all the way until the very bitter end.”
In the second half, junior halfback Joel Cisneros helped avoid the shutout for Valley with a 17-yard scamper, with freshman fullback Dalton Alber having a successful two-point try. Cisneros would find the end zone three minutes later; this time, a 34-yard run, as well as picking up two-points afterwards. In the fourth quarter, junior flanker Jamesyn Virgil scored from 24 yards out, and senior fullback Lucas Goble picked up two more points for Valley to finish out the game’s scoring.
The Vikings finished with 217 yards rushing on 41 attempts, averaging to 5.3 yards per carry. Cisneros ran for 105 yards on 16 carries, while Virgil finished with 65 yards on seven carries. They did not accumulate any more yards offensively, as junior quarterback Branson McBrier did not complete a pass on five attempts.
Valley finishes their season with a 7-4 overall record, and tied for second place in the TRC alongside Peru and Northfield at 6-2.
“To go on about our seniors: when you look at their history, they had winning records in three of the four years, and they have kept The Bell three years. In each of those three years, they have been in contention for the conference title. This is a very good group that set a very good foundation to build on for the following years. That’s what Valley football is about,” said Moriarty.
Marian advances to the sectional championship, as they will face off against Jimtown next Friday. The Knights and Jimmies will have played each other for a sectional title in three of the previous four seasons.
