AKRON - Tippecanoe Valley High football coach Steve Moriarty called his seniors together at halftime Friday night.

He went on to challenge his team as a whole.

The Vikings responded in a big way.

Trailing the visiting South Bend Washington Panthers 14-13 in the first round of Class 3A Sectional 26, Valley came out of the intermission and scored 24 unanswered points in the first eight minutes of the third quarter and rode that momentum to a 49-22 victory.

The Vikings, who tallied their highest playoff point total since their state championship season of 1979, improved to 7-3 and will host undefeated and second-ranked Mishawaka Marian Friday.

Marian beat Lakeland 40-6 Friday night.

Jimtown and West Noble will meet in the other semifinal of Sectional 26.

The only other local team to advance last night was Triton, who won a tightly contested matchup over Churubusco by a score of 24-14.

Warsaw had a bye for this first round of sectional action.

“I felt like we needed to have a little fire on the sidelines in the second half, and if I could get fired up, they could to,” said Moriarty, whose team won a seventh game in back-to-back seasons for the first team since 2006 and 2007.

“We met with the seniors, I’ll be honest. I pulled them aside and told them this is their team, and if you’re happy the way things are going then they’ll continue to go that way, but if not then it’s time.

“We made a couple of defensive adjustments at halftime, and then offensively Coach (Kyle) Brown switched over the defense, and Coach (Carl) Weaver put the counters in the second half. I mean, right off the bat we set the tone that we were gonna steamroll ahead.”

Valley needed just two plays and 24 seconds off the clock to score in the third quarter, taking a 21-14 lead after a 42-yard run by Jamasyn Virgil.

A little over two minutes later the Vikings pushed the lead to 23-14 with a safety as Washington errantly snapped the ball out of the endzone on a punt attempt.

A 17-yard scoring scamper by Virgil with 7:00 minutes remaining in the third quarter gave the hosts a 29-14 advantage, and the rout was on.

Junior Joel Cisneros added scoring runs of 11 and 26 yards for the Vikings, and sophomore Karl Parker scooped up a fumble and carried it 44 yards to paydirt to account for Valley’s final score late in the fourth quarter.

“Karl Parker picked it up and went to the house,” Moriarty said grinning ear to ear. “It was good to see Karl get that. He stepped up to play outside linebacker where he hadn’t … he had been playing JV. He had some struggles maybe last week, but then this week picking up a fumble for a touchdown … what a good success story.”

Valley’s ground game racked up 307 yards on 43 attempts, led by Cisneros’ 22 carries for 128 yards.

Virgil finished with 89 carries on seven attempts, and freshman Dalton Alber added 39 yards on seven carries.

Junior Branson McBrier completed 3 of 9 passes for the Vikings for 50 yards. Virgil led Valley’s receiving corps with two catches for 44 yards.

Washington was led by senior signal caller Tyrone Davis, who carried the ball 22 times for 147 yards, a performance that included touchdown runs of 77 and five yards.

Marshawn Lottie added 99 yards on 12 carries for the Panthers, while Ty’Shaun Grundy finished with 68 yards on six attempts
