Mayor Thallemer Recommends Getting A Flu Shot
By Jackie Gorski-
Thallemer said getting a flu shot is important in keeping people healthy during the COVID-19 pandemic.
While seasonal influenza (flu) viruses are detected year-round in the United States, flu viruses are most common during the fall and winter. The exact timing and duration of flu seasons can vary, but influenza activity often begins to increase in October. Most of the time, flu activity peaks between December and February, although activity can last as late as May, according to the Center of Disease Control website.
“So, yeah, (getting the flu shot is) basically trying to keep people healthy during a seasonal time when people aren’t normally healthy and can get sick and potentially a little bit more suspectible to spreading other diseases, as well as COVID. I don’t know that’s been proven, but that just makes good sense from a health standpoint to stay as healthy as possible during the winter time,” Thallemer said.
He said he always gets a flu shot. He said there’s nothing “breathtaking” in him getting the flu shot, other than him thinking it’s important that other people look hard at getting that done themselves this year.
Thallemer was one person getting a flu shot Tuesday morning during an annual effort by the city to have anyone on the city’s health insurance get the shot. Thallemer estimated 30 to 40 people would possibly get their flu shot Tuesday at City Hall.
