Two men are facing burglary charges after they were allegedly caught trying to steal a water heater.

Brandon Michael Morris, 34, of Columbia City, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 8:36 p.m. Sept. 21 and faces charges for burglary, a Level 4 felony; residential entry, a Level 6 felony; criminal trespass, a Class A misdemeanor; and criminal mischief, a Class B misdemeanor.

Philip Gregory Meade, 68, of 5755 S. East Channel Road, Warsaw, was booked in the Kosciusko County Jail at 8:32 p.m. Sept. 21 and faces the same charges as Morris.

According to the probable cause affidavit filed Friday in Kosciusko Superior Court I, on Sept. 21 Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office deputies and Claypool police responded to a home in reference to a burglary in progress.

Upon arrival, officers found Morris and Meade inside the residence. Morris was using tools to remove a water heater, and Meade was holding a flashlight so Morris could see, according to court papers.

Morris told police, according to the affidavit, that his grandmother owned the house and that his cousin called him and said people were breaking into the home, so he went to remove the water heater to prevent it from being stolen. He told police he intended on taking the water heater away in a vehicle he had parked there.

However, Morris’ grandmother did not own the property. It also came to light that Morris had allegedly hired Meade to carry trash out of the home.

The property’s owner told police that Meade lives nearby and has been caught in the past breaking into the garage and was told to stay off the property.

In jailhouse recordings, according to the affidavit, Morris called his grandmother and told her a friend had told him his grandmother’s trailer was being burglarized so he went to check on it. Morris also told his grandmother that he was only at the home for three minutes and that was to shut and lock the door. Morris never did tell his grandmother about his attempt to steal the water heater or his hiring of Meade to clean up the property, according to court papers.

When police ran the plates of the vehicle Morris had, they returned to be false and fictious. Police also found a gray sock hat in the center console that contained three bags of marijuana. According to the affidavit, Morris said he knew the plates to the vehicle were fake, and said he does wear that sock hat but the marijuana wasn’t his.

According to court records, Morris was just released from the Allen County Community Corrections program, where he was serving a sentence for a Level 6 felony auto theft conviction.

Both men’s bonds were set at $5,250.
