Warsaw Retains “W” Trophy With Win At Wawasee

Halfway through the opening period, Juan Jaramillo staked Warsaw to a 7-0 lead with a 2-yard touchdown run. Wawasee tied it in the final minute of the period with Adam Beer catching a 20-yard scoring pass from Parker Young.
After a Tiger turnover, Caleb Clevenger’s 29-yard field goal have the hosts a 10-7 lead in its quest to regain the “W” Trophy after a five-year absence. But Warsaw was having none of it.
Thomas Greene gave the visitors the lead for good with a 2-yard TD run four minutes before halftime.
After the break, Warsaw trashed Wawasee’s homecoming celebration with touchdown runs by Jaramillo, Mason Martz and Julius Jones to make it 35-10.
Young found Nathan Larson for a 40-yard score with about eight-and-a-half minutes to go, but German Flores-Ortega answered with a 53-yard TD run for Warsaw that closed out the scoring.
Jaramillo finished with 126 yards on 25 carries and Tiger quarterback Greene had 84 yards on nine carries. Flores-Ortega had 81 yards rushing, Jones had five totes for 73 yards and Martz covered 66 yards in his four carries.
Warsaw had 452 yards of total offense, all on the ground, while 128 of Wawasee’s 133 yards came through the air.
The Tigers did not punt in the contest.
Wawasee was led defensively by Robert Schmucker, who had 9.5 tackles, including eight solo tackles, and three assists. Kam Salazar had six solo tackles among his 8.5 stops, with five assists.
Warsaw remains unbeaten in the NLC at 5-0, (6-1 overall) with a matchup with NorthWood in Nappanee Friday night. The Tigers close out the regular season by hosting Concord in two weeks.
Wawasee is winless in five NLC games, and is 2-5 overall. The Warriors play at Mishawaka Friday night. The Warriors close their regular season by hosting Goshen in two weeks. The Redhawks have lsot three games in thier season to COVID to date.
