Area servicemen and veterans will be recognized through a Kosciusko Youth Leadership Academy project.

KYLA is a leadership program for juniors in high school.

Cadet Elizabeth Stone, now a senior at Warsaw Community High School, said that during the program, cadets plan community service projects. “Due to the pandemic, my project completion was postponed, but I am so excited to now be bringing my idea to life,” she said.

Stone’s project is called Warsaw Salutes You Military Banner Recognition Program. The project is to honor local military service personnel. However, there was a personal inspiration for the project as well.

“My inspiration for this project was all military service members in our community, but specifically my older brother, Nate Stone, who is currently serving in the United States Navy and was recently deployed on the USS California, SSN 781,” Stone said.

Stone hopes to recognize area men and women who served in the Armed Forces. The 17-inch-by-40-inch double-sided vinyl banner will display the service members’ photo, rank and era of service. To qualify, the honoree must have resided in the greater Warsaw area, served or is currently serving in the U.S. military.

“I am very pleased with Elizabeth's choice of projects. The idea of honoring members of our Armed Forces has been on her heart a long time. Her brother is an officer in the United States Navy and she knows first hand the sacrifices military members and families make,” KYLA mentor Miechi Petro said. “Our daughter is also a Navy veteran and her husband is currently serving in the United States Navy as well. This military family shared experience is a journey we have walked together. Elizabeth has felt that by honoring veterans and current active duty military, in part, shows support and gratitude for their honorable work.”

The banners will be displayed on lamp posts along the East Market Street corridor beginning in mid-November.

“A few years ago, Market Street was renovated for the Stellar City project and new light posts and banner brackets were installed. Since then, these banner brackets have not been used, so the city graciously allocated these posts for the first cycle of the banner program. As the project grows, I hope that there will be more places to display the banners,” Stone said.

Petro said Stone hopes to launch the banners right around Veterans Day. It is “a bit of a moving target, coordinating with all parties and supply chain during COVID,” Petro said.

“We have been in communication with the mayor's office for approval and also the Warsaw Street Department. The Street Department needs about a week and a half lead time. They are set to hang banners as soon as the printing is complete,” Petro said.

“Elizabeth and I would both like to see this project continue for years to come. Beginning with honoring our military and moving into encouraging civic pride by recognizing the many people it takes to support a healthy community. We believe putting a face to the emergency services (police, sheriff, fire, EMT) agri, health care, sanitation, small business, teachers, etc., etc., etc. will encourage others to get involved with the workings of our community,” Petro said.

To purchase a banner, an application fee of $65 must be paid at the time of the application.

Application forms may be obtained by emailing [email protected]. Banners are sold on a first-come, first-served basis. Deadline for the application is Oct. 28.
