The Tigers produced goals in the 70th and 78th minutes at the Raiders’ Todd Woodworth Field for a 4-2 victory that helped them finish the 2020 regular season at 9-5-2 overall and 7-0 in the NLC.
Warsaw led Northridge 12-11 in shots on goal, including 8-2 in the first half.
The Tigers took a 1-0 lead into halftime thanks to a goal in the 33rd minute by sophomore Jordan Love assisted by senior Audrey Grimm.
Three Northridge direct kicks from 20 yards out sailed over the crossbar in the first half.
“In the second half, they came out firing,” said Warsaw coach Jon Hoover. “Our team did a good job of moving the ball. Northridge came out and caught us a little bit off-guard in the second half. We did a good job of moving the ball through their defense and not relying on one person. We were allowing everyone to get touches and keep Northridge spread out a little bit so we could get through them. We did a good job possession-wise, moving side-to-side and looking for creases to get through.”
There were three goals in the first three minutes of the second half — Northridge senior DeLaney Hoag from senior Hannah Hoffman, Warsaw junior Corrissa Koontz from Grimm and Raider Hoag from junior Tess Baylis.
“We came out more fired up out of the half and playing the way we think we can play,” said Northridge coach Chris Malott. “We really didn’t do much at half other that reinforce the things we need to fix a little bit.
“We realized we could play with Warsaw and came out in the second half with a lot more energy.”
Koontz took a feed from Grimm in the 70th minute and broke the tie.
“Audrey and Corrissa are both big-time players,” said Hoover. “In a game like tonight you have to have those players step up and they both did.”
Sophomore Rylee Burns tacked on the fourth goal in the 78th minute.
Junior goalkeeper Kierstin Parker made nine saves (seven in the second half) for Warsaw.
Northridge senior netminder Alex Sheets made eight stops (seven in the first half).
Warsaw plays Fort Wayne Wayne at 5 p.m. Oct. 8 in the Class 3A Homestead Sectional.
The junior varsity Tigers were 7-0 winners against Northridge. Goals were scored by Joey Rastrelli, Taylon Chastain, Kaiden Pepper, Natalie Brown, Sophia Johnston and Sarah Kratzsch. There was also a Northridge own goal.
