According to Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Office Public Information Officer Sgt. Chris Francis, shortly before 11 a.m. Thursday, road crews were directing traffic on CR 700S, near CR 425W, for an electrical pole project.
According to witnesses, Quincy Akeem Jenkins, 27, of Elkhart, entered a traffic control vehicle after he exited a white SUV. Jenkins then left the traffic control vehicle and fled to a neighboring home, removing clothing as he was running.
Members of the utility crew notified the occupant of the home, stopping her from answering the door. Jenkins again tried to enter a vehicle and then ran west to another residence, where he forced entry through a back window, according to Francis. Officers from the Mentone and Claypool police departments arrived within minutes of the initial call and confirmed that Jenkins was inside the home.
Kosciusko County Central Dispatch made contact with the homeowner, who told police that no one else was inside the home. The homeowner responded to the scene and was instrumental in relaying vital information to deputies, Francis said.
Multiple attempts were made to communicate with Jenkins, who refused to answer. However, he did release a small dog through the front door. Kosciusko County SWAT was activated, and a plan was established to enter the residence. Officers placed a robot inside the back door of the home and were able to observe the interior.
After speaking with Jenkins through the communication system on the robot, Jenkins surrendered to SWAT operators and was taken into custody without further incident. Jenkins was taken to an area hospital for a medical evaluation.
Formal charges are pending in the Kosciusko County Prosecutor’s Office and will be released as they become available, Francis said.
Responding agencies included KCSO, Claypool and Mentone police departments, NET 43, Indiana State Police, Kosciusko County SWAT, Lutheran EMS and the North Webster/Tippecanoe Township Fire Department.
