NORTH WEBSTER – Six applications were approved for North Webster’s share of grant money from the K21 Health Foundation.

“With a lot of work over the summer … we finally got it narrowed down,” said North Webster Town Council President Lisa Strombeck.

The $200,000 from the foundation is designated for health and fitness initiatives. Strombeck said Webster’s money will be divided as follows:

• St. Anthony’s Medical Clinic, which will be in the Methodist church – $25,000

• North Webster Public Library – $10,000

• Wawasee Summer League – $25,000

• North Webster Trail, a biking and walking trail – $30,000

• North Webster Community Center – $80,000

• North Webster Fire Department – $30,000

Strombeck said North Webster was the first town in Kosciusko County to get all its applications approved.

Clerk-treasurer Betsy Luce said because the town is funded with tax money they don’t often have a lot of opportunity to help out. They’re “very grateful to K21,” she said.

Also during the meeting, Tippecanoe Township trustee Chris Francis said the township board voted unanimously to proceed with the three hearings that would be the next step in establishing a joint fire territory with the town of North Webster.

Strombeck moved that the town proceed with the hearings. “I think it’s fair that you … give the public the opportunity to come in and give input,” she said.

Nothing will be decided until the third and final meeting, she said, and the town council is required to be at all three hearings. Francis said he will get the dates set and let the council know.

In other business:

• Dalis Owens was sworn in as a new officer with the North Webster Police Department. Police Chief Greg Church said Owens retired from the Kosciusko County Sheriff’s Department. He graduated from the Indiana Law Enforcement Academy in 1997. He will begin his duties with the town Dec. 5.

• The council approved a three-year agreement with Inframark. Town attorney Jack Birch said the agreement is “identical” to the previous agreement, with just a few minor cost increases.

• Church said the town will have its new squad car in early January.

• Councilman Dan Thystrup said he’s been able to connect with the people doing the bike trail study and said they were “very optimistic” that the town will be able to have the bike trail and sidewalk. The trail would go from town to the middle school, he said.

• Luce said the town is eligible to receive $37,699 from the CARES Fund, but to do so she needed the town’s approval to establish two funds. The council approved setting up the new funds.

The next meeting will be Dec. 15 in the community center.
