PIERCETON – Town Councilmen Tom Barker, Matt Brubaker and Mandy Espinoza OK’d proposals from town marshal Tim Sammons and Clerk-treasurer Myra Mast to apply CARES Act money to two expenditures at Monday’s meeting.

Sammons asked for three Dell computers with cameras and scanning equipment so the department could attend virtual meetings more easily. Costs for the computers and scanners are $7,683.

Mast suggested the carpet in the clerk’s office be replaced by linoleum, which can be more easily disinfected than the current carpet. The council approved Mast’s recommendation to purchase the material and installation from Carpet Depot for $5,931.24.

The town received $33,125 in CARES Act funds with about $12,000 left in the account.

Sammons introduced Randy Bowman, owner of R & B Car Co., saying his company is certified to install law enforcement equipment in squad cars. Many police departments in the region use the company’s services because of the reasonable pricing, Sammons said.

Additionally, Bowman plans to pay for the cadet polo shirt uniforms when the 2021 class begins.

Sammons presented Bowman with a certificate of appreciation from the Pierceton police officers.

The marshal said he hasn’t been able to schedule new officer Ashley Jones’ state police academy course yet. As with so many types of training, he said, the academy plans to reduce in-person attendance and conduct many classes virtually.

The TextMyGov program purchased by the town has launched. Citizens can receive text messages to receive notifications from the town, the utilities or the street department. Instruction about how to opt into the program are available in the clerk’s office and will be posted on the town’s website and Facebook page. Residents can also text inquiries to 574-465-6004 to report an issue or get answers.

Individual Retirement Accounts (IRAs) are for people over the age of 70.5 years old. Unlike other distributions, which are taxed at ordinary income tax rates, Qualified Charitable Distributions (QCDs) allow for a tax-free distribution from an IRA, provided that the distribution goes directly to a qualified charity.
