Convicted Child Molester Gets 24 Years

A convicted child molester from Silver Lake was sentenced to 24 years in prison Monday by Kosciusko Superior Court I Judge David Cates.

Daniel S. Louvier, 37, of 208 S. High St., Silver Lake, was convicted of two Level 4 felony child molesting counts by a jury Oct. 13. Louvier was arrested and charged Jan. 31 after a then-10-year-old child told her mother that Louvier had inappropriately touched her several times while she visited his home between 2018 and 2019. A second girl also came forward and accused Louvier of the same thing. Both children and their mothers testified during court proceedings, delivering emotional impact statements on the effects of Louvier’s actions.

In court Monday, the mother of one of the victims read a letter her daughter wrote to the judge that said she no longer has the happy, talkative personality she once did. The child said the repeated molestations scared her and she, at the beginning, thought it was normal. It wasn’t until the child had witnessed her mother gasping about reading a news article of a person molesting a child that the victim realized that’s what was happening to her and told her mother.

The mother of the second victim then spoke in court Monday and said her daughter had nothing left to say because she did what she needed to do by telling and that Louvier is no longer worth her time. However, the mother had words for the court and Louvier to hear. She called Louvier a predator of the most cowardly kind.

“What he stole, he cannot give back to either one of these girls, but what can be done is justice and protection,” she said. “I believe that there is a special hell for those that attempt to break families by hurting kids, and he’ll be there.”

The woman said that Louvier’s “sick lust” caused lost friendships and community struggle, but that the family is brave.

Kosciusko County Chief Prosecuting Attorney Brad Voelz told Cates that Louvier’s actions against two separate children didn’t just happen once but rather multiple times over a long period of time.

“He has a criminal history that proves he’s not to be trusted and would not do well on probation. He violates whenever he’s given the chance,” Voelz told the judge.

When Louvier had a chance to speak, he denied the crimes he’s been convicted of and said he took it to trial because he was “standing up for the right thing.” He recounted how he’s lost his wife, his home, his family and said he plans to appeal.

Cates said Louvier has accrued 283 actual jail time credit, but “I’m gonna give credit to the victims to have the strength to stand up and say what they did in public. And I believe them.”

Cates sentenced Louvier to the Indiana Department of Corrections for 12 years on each count and to have them run consecutively.

“You have done significant harm to each of the victims in this case and multiple acts against each,” Cates said. “I cannot find a mitigating factor.”

Louvier will have to register a sexually violent predator and child molester for life upon his release from prison. Family of the victims were emotional after court Monday.
