MENTONE – Russell Dale McGowen, 92, of Mentone, passed at 9:03 a.m. Monday, Nov. 2, 2020, at his residence.

Dale was born on Dec. 5, 1927, in Kosciusko County, to the late Bert and Bessie Silveus McGowen. He was married on May 1, 1954, in Plymouth, to Violet M. Bollman, who preceded him in death on June 8, 2011.

He was a 1946 graduate of Mentone High School. He served his country in the U.S. Army. He worked for Bendix of South Bend in the Aviation Brake Division for 35 years, retiring in 1985. He was a longtime member of the Mentone United Methodist Church.  

He was an avid hunter, fisherman, mushroom hunter, ice fisherman and nightcrawler hunter. He always enjoyed playing euchre and dominos. He was an avid Chicago Cubs fan. Dale and Vi visited Colorado and Florida for many years, as well as Australia and New Zealand. He spent many mornings at Teel’s Restaurant socializing with friends.

He is survived by his daughters: Terry Hively, of Mentone; Sherry and husband Stephen Yates, of Melbourne, Australia; and Lori and husband Frank Halbert, of Rye, Colo.; seven grandchildren; and 10 great-grandchildren.

Dale was preceded in death by his parents, Bert and Bessie (Silveus) McGowen; wife, Violet “Vi” McGowen; a great-grandson, Marcus Yates; brothers, Herschel and Pete; and sisters, Mary, Bea, Mabel, Belva and Zola.

Visitation hours will be from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at King Memorial Home, 101 N. Tucker St., Mentone. The funeral service for Mr. McGowen will be at 1 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 7 at King Memorial Home, Mentone, with Pastors Jeff Herron and Gail Law officiating.

The interment will take place in the Harrison Center (Wooden) Cemetery, Etna Green, where graveside military rites will be performed by the American Legion Post #49 of Warsaw.

 Masks will be required for all in attendance for Dale’s services.
