Manchester Joins Author For Statewide Virtual Event Tuesday

By Staff Report-

Jean Thompson, author of “The Year We Left Home,” will host an online, statewide discussion Tuesday, and Manchester University is including it in its Values, Ideas and the Arts (VIA) series.

Students take part in VIA events in order to earn academic credit, according to a news release from Manchester University.

The hour-long Indiana Humanities event begins at 7 p.m. It is open to the public, as is MU’s related book club.

Thompson’s novel was chosen by Indiana Humanities as the 2020 One State/One Story selection. “The Year We Left Home” offers a multi-generational look at living in the Midwest during the final decades of the 20th century, stated the release. Beginning in Iowa in 1973, the novel follows the Erickson family through the many changes affecting American life.

The bestselling-author and National Book Award-finalist will talk about the book, her career as a writer and the stories we tell about the Midwest.

Barb Shoup, founding director of the Indiana Writers Center, will moderate.

The free program will be online via Zoom. Register to attend at www.eventbrite.com/e/inconversation-with-jean-thompson-registration-116010988991.

A Manchester book club will focus on “The Year We Left Home.” Those interested may contact [email protected] to learn more. The book discussions will bring together members of the university and North Manchester communities and will meet in the spring. Members of the book club will receive a free copy of the book.
