They were married May 23, 1970, at Center United Methodist Church in Silver Lake by Pastor K. B. Cohee.
Gary is a retired truck driver from Swihart Grain in Silver Lake. Avanell is currently employed as a childcare provider at WeeCare Children's Ministries in Akron. Grandma Abby, as she is often referred to, has lovingly taken care of infants and children while their parents worked for the past 20 years and remembers each one of them fondly.
The couple have three children: Gary Smith, Fort Wayne; Henry Smith, Akron; and David and Angela Madeford, Akron.
They have six biological grandchildren: Devin and Kaylyn Madeford, Akron; Thane Madeford, Fort Wayne; Bryce Madeford, Akron; Ethan Smith, Fort Wayne; Griffin Smith, Akron; and numerous "adopted" infants and children that she has cared for in her 20 years who still refer to her as Grandma Abby.
Due to COVID-19 restrictions, a small family gathering will take place to celebrate their milestone anniversary.
